I was late to work.
Four months at the Science Directorate and already my second time pushing the clock. It bothered me more than it should have. If I wanted to get a promotion to immersion technician, I needed to look like someone the Creation Engine would trust. The Engine didn’t care, of course, but the people who controlled access to it did.
I badged through the east entrance and took the long corridor at a half-jog. The lights were tuned a notch cooler than daylight. Floors hummed with the steady breath of machines hidden beneath them. Past the glass, the Engine’s chamber glowed in quiet pulses. I kept my eyes forward and pretended I was early.
“Late again, Faris?” Grig called as I slipped into our bay.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll make it up tonight.”
He didn’t bother to hide his grin. “Make it up on weather. We’ve got anomalies. Spikes across two regions, then a critical cascade. A few residents dead.”
Others called them Simulacrumians. The Directorate preferred residents. Either way, the sting was the same.
“I’ll take a look,” I said.
We were quality assurance for the Simulacrum project, bug smashers to the people who liked their jokes blunt. We patched what could be patched before immersion techs had to put on a headset and walk a fix through. Most days it meant small tickets and small satisfactions. Sometimes it meant deciding whether a small ticket was going to turn into a funeral.
History, they taught us in training, is not only a list of what happened. It is a warning written in numbers. The Simulacrum existed because numbers had been ignored. Seventy-nine years ago, three nuclear devices found their targets. Forty million died before anyone decided to stop. The wars that didn’t follow still broke the world. Depressions stacked on depressions. Crops failed, then markets, then governments. By the time the counts steadied, nearly half of humanity was gone.
Twenty-five years ago, what remained tried something new. States that could still call themselves States folded into a single body and called it necessary. The Science Directorate stood up inside that body with a promise larger than survival. It promised foresight. It promised memory that didn’t lie.
The Simulacrum began twenty years ago as a hypothesis built from models and computation. Ten years of work turned that hypothesis into a running world, observable from first light to last dusk. At first, it was a device for watching long arcs. Orbits and weather cycles. Resource flows. Then the team noticed correspondences. People in our world had analogs there, not one-to-one, but close enough to study. Immersion technicians were trained to test policy, pressure, and chance within safe bounds. Nudge here, observe there, learn how small changes turn into consequences. It was a massive sociological study with teeth, or it was playing god, depending on who had the microphone.
The argument never ended. The public loved the spectacle. Some called it a miracle. Others, a mistake. The Directorate said the people inside were lines of code and kept saying it until the cameras moved on. The rest of us did our work and tried not to think too hard about the questions that kept returning when the building was quiet.
I dropped into my chair and brought the boards up. Columns of tickets glowed in greens, ambers, and red. A meteorological feed had gone jittery over a coastal sector. A mid-level forecasting model had begun to overvalue mountain shadows. A local governance routine had looped on a minor budget item and halted a clinic’s supply order. All fixable. All staring at me as if to say, prove it.
“Did you hear the news?” Grig asked.
“Which news? I was off-grid with family.”
“One of the immersion techs went in and just vanished. Beacon cold. No trace.”
“Has that ever happened before?”
“There are rumors,” he said. “Nothing official. Not until now, maybe.”
“Probably why they test us until our eyes cross,” I said, and tried to turn it into a joke that would land.
The Creation Engine sat at the heart of the building like the answer to a question no one had asked out loud. The name sounded theatrical, but the thing itself was not. A cradle of fiber and field. A coil of harmonics that learned a person’s pattern and taught the Simulacrum to hear it. Teleportation was the word people used when they wanted to sound unafraid. The first time I saw a volunteer return, eyes open and slow to focus, I believed in the machine more than any briefing could make me believe.
Orientation had been a maze of clearances and exams. Polysomnography to see how I slept. Memory drills. Ethics modules with questions designed to trip you if you liked cleverness more than care. Somewhere in there, a psychologist asked what I would change first if I could change a law in a city no one had ever heard of. I said street lighting. She wrote something on her pad and didn’t tell me if it was the right answer. I have thought about that silence almost every day since.
There was always a draft of tension in the building. On bad days, it sounded like rumor. In-sim anomalies that would not clear. Data clusters that behaved like they had private rules. People who spent too long inside came back with a pause between words, like swimmers who had gone out past the buoys. We made fun of that in the cafeteria. We didn’t make fun of it at our desks.
I dug into weather. The first anomaly was small, then another. A thin cold front had formed out of nowhere in a remote corner of the sim and then propagated like it had found a reason. The forecasting model kept nudging the front to strengthen even when surrounding conditions suggested it should fall apart. Someone had trained into it a preference for coherence over noise. A reasonable preference in ordinary time. The system was not in an ordinary time.
I flagged the misweighting, adjusted the inputs, and watched the front hesitate. A second model revised the pressure difference downward. The front stalled, then thinned along the inland edge. More residents would live because of math and luck. I logged the fix and moved to the clinic loop. A single stuck rule had kept an order from clearing. I unfroze it and sent a quiet apology to a place that would never know my name.
By mid-afternoon, the boards had the calm look of a day that would end on time. That was when a transport anomaly flashed and cleared before I could click it. A slow stream of logs followed, innocuous as rain. Someone somewhere was adding new data. The boards didn’t care to tell me who.
The Simulacrum was always larger than my part of it. I reminded myself of that whenever I started to think I could hold the whole thing in my head. I reminded myself again when Grig leaned over the partition, eyes on a news feed he was not supposed to have open.
“Officials in dark suits,” he said. “Outside the Engine. I think we have a meeting we were not invited to.”
“Then let’s not be the ones who go,” I said.
“Good instinct,” he said. “Better than mine.”
He went back to his desk. I turned my chair a fraction and watched the Engine through two panes of glass. Three people stood near the chamber door, heads close, voices careful. I caught the words missing technician and unauthorized access and looked away like a new hire who wanted a long career.
The afternoon became small tasks again. A faulty sensor in a coastal buoy, replaced by a model. A timing skew in a farmer’s market lighting program, fixed with a simpler loop. Compared to the Simulacrum’s scale, it all felt like patching hairline cracks on the hull of an ark. Small mattered. Leave a crack alone, and the flood did the rest.
By late shift, Grig drifted back with a file in his hand he didn’t need to carry. “About the weather,” he said, casual in a way that was not casual. “We saw a cold front grow from nowhere in a remote sector. There was a fatality count. Not high. Not zero.”
“I saw the front. I calmed it.”
“Good,” he said. “Keep the notes. We’ll want the notes.”
He set the file down and lowered his voice. “You ever think about living in there?”
“Knowing what I know?” I said. “Editing a day if I don’t like it. Or turning it off and letting the rules carry me.”
“Both sound like trouble,” he said.
“I know,” I said. “That’s why I’m still here.”
He nodded toward the Engine. “That and the tests.”
“That and the tests,” I said.
The project had always been two stories at once. One was about science and prediction. The other was about people who might be lines of code and might not be. On good days I believed the first story and treated the second like a thought experiment. On bad days I couldn’t tell which story was truer. Today felt like a day that was going to choose for me.
Toward the end of my shift, the weather board ticked again. A minor spike, quickly smoothed. I made a note to review it in the morning. It felt like a blip that could wait. It felt like a sentence that may matter later.
I packed up my bag and closed my console. Through the glass I saw the officials again. Their conversation had turned into a shape I recognized. Crisis without a name yet. I kept walking like I didn’t see them. My badge chimed at the exit. The light in the Engine’s chamber brightened, and then dimmed, as if breathing in a slow pulse.
Outside, the evening had gone cold in the way steel remembers winter. I caught my reflection in the glass and almost didn’t recognize the person looking back. The person looked like they belonged here. The person also looked like they were about to be asked a question they were not ready to answer.
At home, my friends online would ask how the day went. I would say fine. I would leave out the part where a technician’s beacon had gone dark. I would leave out the part where a cold front found a reason to exist. I would leave out the part where the Engine’s hum had sounded, for a breath, like something pressing its hand against the glass from the other side.
I had no idea how fast the weather would turn. I had no idea whether the rumor about the missing tech would still be rumor in the morning. I only knew that the Simulacrum was listening, and that the Creation Engine kept breathing, and that if history had a warning left to give, we were about to hear it.
The Simulacrum, narrated from several different characters’ first-person points of view, is a delight to read. One of the most interesting characters, Kaden, takes his turn as narrator only when the story is past the halfway point. Kaden is effectively introduced as a child (and later an adult) who desires and finds or creates order in the world and questions deviations others ignore. One could wish he had been introduced earlier, which could be done without prematurely giving away plot elements. Yet numerous other characters and questions pull the reader forward, and previous chapters provide hints and heighten the suspense, making Kaden more intriguing when he does speak. The various narrators’ shifting points of view are an effective tool for keeping the reader curious and supplying just the right information to maintain suspense.
The Simulacrum challenges readers to ponder recurring questions about human experience. What is the difference between reality and simulation, whether digital or analog? Does the essence of human consciousness differ from what sophisticated AI can or might create? What does it mean to be a person? Crisp shows how these questions take on new urgency as humans create machines that mimic human activity, including complex thought processes. How much like a human being can an artificial creation become without being recognized as essentially human? If technology does create artificial persons, what rights will the artificial people have? Science fiction has asked these questions before, but Crisp succeeds in asking again with no sense of redundancy.
The story blurs lines between everyday reality and the machine-generated world in a way that is reminiscent of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. Readers who have loved other stories in which characters from the familiar world enter a secondary world that also becomes perfectly real may find much to like here. Think of the world created by the Wachowskis in their Matrix comics, or the exploits of Moriarty, the holodeck character who becomes more than the sum of his code, in Jeffrey Lang’s Star Trek novel The Light Fantastic.
Occasional sentences could benefit from editing and revision, but it would be a mistake to let desire for perfection prevent appreciation of a superb and very enjoyable read. A book that has something significant to say about important topics and makes its points in a way that is fun to read is rare. The Simulacrum manages to do both.
