âChasers are boys that chase other sprinters.
Hunters are girls that hunt nuts for winter.
(One check box for boys and one check box for girls.
Placed into boxes, before theyâre born squirrels.)
But Shiners are squirrels who, once they find bling,
Will not chase another nor go A-cor-ning.
If you were a squirrel, would you fit your box?
Or would you stay outside & dance in your socks?â
Ron Roeckerâs âThe Shiny Shenanigans of Aunties & Squirrelâ is a story about gender role stereotypes, biases and expectations, wrapped in an engaging, entertaining, surprising and relatable family adventure for kids of all ages. This tale features a loving, multi-generational, extended family and Roeckerâs signature sing/song writing style, plot twists and endearing characters.
With a life-threatening acorn shortage, The Aunties and Squirrel are faced with a huge dilemma: change who they are for the greater good or be banned from the village forever. The clever Aunties and Nephew realize they have been preparing for their crucial roles their entire lives. However, with secrets to reveal, insights to share, mysteries to solve and hidden treasures yet to be discovered, will The Three be able to uncover the most priceless lesson of all?
Ron Roeckerâs The Shiny Shenanigans of Aunties & Squirrel is an engaging tale about gender roles and stereotypes. Yet, this funny and beautifully illustrated story makes its point without  being too "preachy". So if you are in the market for a book that has this kind of theme, then this book is for you!
With a life-threatening acorn shortage, the squirrels are confronted with a predicament: change who they are for the good of the community, or be indefinitely prohibited from the town. The "Aunties" realize that they have been prepared for this pivotal role their whole lives. Be that as it may, will they be able to reveal the invaluable lesson to the others?
I found this story to be very interesting. It is filled with quick-wit rhymes that are easy to follow, and which should engage most young readers. My one feedback is that the book is too long, at 49 pages, considering that most children's books are 32 pages long. Nonetheless, it is a wonderful tale.
As always, I found this Ron Roeckerâs book to contain illustrations which are accessible and interesting to young readers. The colour scheme and drawings invite readers to review this book again and again - well done!
In sum, I would encourage readers to pick up a copy of this book at their local bookstore or online. It has a current theme and is filled with musical verses and beautiful pictures, which makes it easy to read and interesting.
