It's a story that will warm your heart, even during the coldest of winter days.
A wonderful & whimsical winter tale!
It’s a beautifully crisp winter’s day, and young Marla Little is just about to dress her snowman when a playful wind sprite topples the snowman and sends him rolling through the picturesque little village. With Marla in hot pursuit, the breezy snowman rolls past the quaint shops where the townsfolk help dress him quickly along the way: buttons from the haberdasher, a carrot nose from the greengrocer, a jaunty hat from the milliner.
When the ethereal wind sprite finally stops her blowing, she sprinkles her magical ice crystals on the snowman, granting the wish of the precious girl who completes her wondrous day by dancing with her dapper snowman under the moon.
This playful derivative of a cumulative tale brings themes of sharing, generosity, and community to life, reminiscent of a modern parable story. Set against exquisite, hand-drawn illustrations, the rhythmic text with a lively repeating refrain presents a delightful, whimsical read-aloud that children will love.
Kids peer out the window, watching in amazement as snowflakes gently glide down to the ground. Their eyes and smiles grow bigger as the snow inches higher and higher. Sledding. Skiing. Snowboarding. Snowball fights. Snow angels. There is so much fun to be had outdoors. Marla Little ventured out into the winter wonderland to build a snowman. With his body constructed, Marla Little was ready to decorate her new snow friend with a top hat, a yellow scarf, a carrot, three buttons, and two sticks for arms. Before she could bring her frosty friend to life, a mischievous wind sprite intervened, sending the snowman on an unexpected journey.
The wind sprite was lovely; she had long blue hair and a white gown. She fit in perfectly with the wintery scene. As she blew the snowman off the hill, I wondered if young kids would understand what a sprite is, especially the book's recommended age group of 3-8 years. A sprite can be an elf or fairy, for those who don't know. Since this sweet sprite didn't have pointy ears, they must be a fairy, which traditional folklore frequently depicts them without wings and using magic to fly.
I adored the whimsical artwork and the picture-perfect town. A place where every shop was owned and run by locals, without a big box store or franchise store in sight! Fun and creative store signs that catch your eye and draw you in. People dressed in vintage clothing, like they were plucked from the past. As I read the story, I felt like I had entered a Hallmark Christmas movie.
In The Roll-Away Snowman, shop owners gifted the jolly fellow a specialty item at each stop. After reading "Shiver-dee-doo! Oh-shiver dee-dee," ask your listening audience to guess what item the snowman will receive from the haberdasher, knitter, florist, milliner, and greengrocer. While words, such as haberdashery and milliner, can be confusing and new terminology for some, the beautiful hard-drawn shop windows and signs should erase any confusion. Again, I applaud the artist's darling creations. The writer also needs a standing ovation for their spectacular storytelling.
The Roll-Away Snowman is a beautifully scripted and illustrated storybook showcasing generosity and community values. It culminates in a heartwarming wish coming true, the details of which I'll leave for you to discover when you read the book. I highly recommend this sharing with your child(ren) or class. It's a story that will warm your heart, even during the coldest of winter days.

I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
