Once upon a time a little girl named Cindy and a little boy named James were playing in the yard. They were good friends. They played together almost everyday. One day, the little boy said to the little girl, I don't feel well. The next day Cindy asked her parents about James. They informed Cindy that James was admitted to the hospital. Cindy asked if she could visit.
Cancer is a word that no one wants to hear. It's a thousand times worse when a child gets the heart-wrenching diagnosis.
Cindy and James were playing one day, as usual, when James said he didn't feel well. Unfortunately, James didn't have a cold or stomach bug; he had cancer and was admitted to the hospital. The pediatric oncology ward had big, colorful rooms. The staff was friendly and professional and always ready to help with the ring of the "magic bell," which was attached to every hospital bed. During the day, volunteers in funny hats would deliver special snacks to every child, and at night, the extra special snacks were dispensed by people wearing Harry Potter costumes. In a time of pain and fear, I loved how the staff and volunteers tried to bring joy into each child's day.
We meet three more cancer patients in The Princess Has Cancer, aged 4-7 years. (James's age was not listed, so I assume he falls somewhere in that bracket.) Sara, Anne, Joey, and James became acquainted with one another at the support group run by Counselor Michael, Dr. Steinman, and Nurse Gail. They learned each other's likes, and over time, they became a family, including James's best friend and occasional session visitor, Cindy. During one session, Dr. Steinman wanted each child to ask one question. Word of caution: the questions are moving, so keep tissues nearby. As the four patients, and occasionally James's friend Cindy, gathered together over the years, their bond grew. They leaned on each other and spoke about their "bad days." The "bad days" shares were as moving as their questions. If you didn't tear up before, you might now, especially if you know someone who has or is currently fighting the disease.
These four sweet children battled the disease for many years. Their unwavering courage and resilience in the face of such a formidable foe is truly inspiring. They achieved what any stricken individuals hope for: remission. Cancer is a terrible disease, but through battling it, eight people created a bond that will last a lifetime.
The book is advertised for 4-16-year-olds. Teens will have no issue understanding the technical terms, but younger kids might. Be prepared to explain certain medical terminology to pre-k and some elementary students, such as antiemetic and aspirated. I understand why the author did not include photos of the kids during their journey; however, including that group photo (support group members and staff) at Princess Anne's sixteen-year-old royal birthday bash would have been the perfect ending to this book..to their journey.
I adored the story; it touched my heart and moved me deeply. Maybe more since I, too, have watched someone fight for their life. While this story begins with tears of sadness, I encourage you to read it because soon, those tears of sorrow will become tears of joy. Share these brave souls' journey and allow them to become role models for your suffering child. Give them strength to fight and hope for the future.
