The NOLO: Flood in the Desert, the second adventure book in the NOLO (Nolumus Friendicus) series, will captivate sci-fi fans in part through the creation of the unique main non-human characters, Izzy and her friend, Adam. Izzy is an 87ft, 33-ton Jungle NOLO with three legs, webbed hands and feet, and bright green fins. They are a furry creature that has traits similar to those of an elephant and a giraffe. With its long neck, trunk, and tusks, it is quite an interesting sight, and Adam is no slouch either. A close-up shot of the Desert NOLO's face made the larger-than-life character appear more human than their jungle counterpart. Adam did have a large, curved nose/trunk, but his bald head, white beard, and soft features made him look like a stereotypical older gentleman. Love the green beard bead! The NOLO come in many species (complete list in end credits), and their existence is (surprisingly) not kept a secret. They are known to help those in need and literally come running when they hear their name called: "NOLO."
Izzy is not only aiding the humans in The NOLO: Flood in the Desert; she's also searching for Adam, the true protector of the Three Finger Divide. While Izzy is worrying about her missing friend, another story is unfolding: Evan and Ella have started their exploration of the Three Finger Divide without a care in the world, but their day is about to take a drastic turn for the worse. A slight trickle of water soon becomes a raging flood, leaving the kids stranded with no way to call for help because the water has swallowed up their only line of communication. In the world of make-believe, hope is never truly gone. Ella and Evan recall their grandmother's stories of the NOLO and how, if they ever found themselves in trouble, they should shout for their help and listen for the loud thumps marking their swift arrival. An 87ft tall creature must have a massively long stride length, so it came as no surprise how quickly Izzy arrived to offer aid. What did surprise me was that no one minded the tourists taking photos of her. I suspected the locales would like to keep the NOLO's existence a secret. I also wondered why no one (family or search and rescue) came looking for the missing kids. Not a single mention that humans were out there searching for them. I understand the floodwaters proved hazardous, but the omission stuck out at me.
Flood in the Desert had wonderful illustrations that captured the feeling of each scene. Readers will feel the kids' fear as the water nips at their heels. They'll feel Izzy's happiness as she stares down at the kids, cheering in the palm of her furry hand. We will feel Izzy's sadness when she locates Adam's cave, but her desert friend is nowhere in sight. Smiles will reign supreme as the kids hug the two NOLOs and when the story mentions other kids playing peek-a-boo in Izzy's fur. I wish the artist had included that sweet scene, but I applaud the artwork presented.
Flood in the Desert is an under-100-page book with short chapters and lots of illustrations. It's the perfect adventure book for young readers, especially those who like sci-fi creatures mixed with real-life scenarios.
