Join the Monkey King and his band of friends in an epic quest to save Asia from the deadly forces of the Demon King.
All the Monkey King wanted to do was return to the Kingdom of Heaven and enjoy himself with his friends among the Golden Mansions. However, the threat of the Demon King of Confusion is still a danger to the whole world and if the Monkey King and his friends don't stop him, all will be lost.
With Orders from the Jake Emperor himself, the Monkey King must team up with the Star Spirit, a former ally of the Demon King, to find out what his plans in the continent of Asia truly are.
The Monkey King and his friends, however, are not sure if they can truly trust the Star Spirit. Can the former demon truly have reformed and broken ties with his former master? Or will he end up betraying the Monkey King and his friends in the end?
Let's find out!
Continuing the Monkey King's world tour, The Monkey King Goes to Asia picks up right where the action left off in book five. The courageous Monkey King and his team, gentle Tripitaka, stalwart Pigsy, and wise sorcerer Sandy find themselves in the illustrious Kingdom of Heaven. Together with their new compatriot the Star Spirit, former ally of the Demon King of Confusion, Monkey and the others must find a way to bring down the forces of the Demon King and save the world. Learning of a deadly threat to the continent of Asia, Monkey and his fellow heroes journey to save Asia and find a way to turn the tide of battle against the Demon King.
The Monkey King's world tour has been an incredible series, and this latest entry continues the nonstop heroic adventure. Monkey and his friends must learn to work alongside the Star Spirit, often finding new and creative ways to solve the many difficulties that arise in their quest. I loved the teamwork of the heroes, as well as the immersive world of Chinese mythology that was so excellently presented within this volume. As I read about the incredible quest of Monkey and his friends, the action was so real that I felt almost as if I were reading a graphic novel. I laughed out loud during the scene with the slime, and learned new and wonderful lessons about friendship alongside Monkey, Tripitaka, and the Star Spirit.
The illustrations for the book were simply breathtaking, lending an extra air of elegance to an already rich and immersive universe. And while traveling the world to stop evil, Monkey and the others learn more about the beautiful planet they are defending, as they journey far and near in their quest.
This is such an incredible story that there are very few detractions for me to mention. The only ones that stand out are that the tense of the book tends to change from past to present throughout, which is a little distracting. Also, a tiny bit of recap on who the characters are would be helpful for newcomers to the series.
However, there is so much wonder, richness of culture, and optimistic adventure in this book that I too feel like one of Monkey's companions on the world tour to save the universe. Perfect for readers 7 and up, and all who love world travel, mythology, and adventure, The Monkey King Goes to Asia is a must-read that simply can't be missed.
