Chapter 1
The Uncharted Path to God's "More"
Embracing the Journey
Embark on a transformative journey down the road less traveled, where the straight path reveals God's “more” for you.
Have you ever felt a longing for more of God in your life? I asked that question many times and felt I couldn’t reach that place of "more." In our pursuit of understanding God's will for us, we often encounter challenges. Reflecting on my journey, I discovered that God's "more" is revealed as we navigate the path He has set before us. So, I’m taking you on the road less traveled. This straight road, seldom seen or heard of, offers profound insights. It stretches before us, presenting pit stops, stumbling blocks, and signs. Yet, with a divine road map, you will discover hidden treasures and preparation for God's "more" at each crossroad.
The Quest for “More”
You know God is with you, but satisfaction eludes you. You ask the Lord for more and may experience a touch or feel goosebumps in His presence during worship, but it only lasts for a moment. Some are baptized in the Holy Ghost, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, yet still aren’t satisfied. Others operate in spiritual gifts—are leaders in the church—yet carry a lingering sense that there is "more." We all desire a deeper connection with God, and while He's there for us, He's more interested in us aligning with His ways, His will, His thoughts, and His mind. We were designed to have the mind of Christ, the heart of the Father, and the sensitivity of the Holy Spirit. This book will explore how to grow more like Him at each crossroad.
Also, God desires to give you more especially for the pouring out of the greater glory that He is releasing in the end times. However, receiving more of God requires preparation and active participation. It's a journey of growth, moving from one level of understanding to another. To be transformed from glory to glory demands a process. Purity must not be a one-time cleansing but an ongoing life journey as we walk out of God's call. Join me on a transformative journey where "more" is not just a desire but a destination. God sees your desire for a deeper connection with Him, and He won't overlook it.
Navigating the Unexplored Path
The Message of Purity, God's Way serves as the road map for that journey. It will help you understand how to walk in purity in every aspect of life: at work, in relationships, in church, and all your interactions with others. I will show you, based on the Scriptures, how to walk in the Spirit and not give your flesh room to maneuver. You will read about some of my documented personal experiences with the Lord and the testimonies of others who have discovered hidden treasures along their journey to purity. You will grow in faith, understanding, wisdom, and the fear of the Lord. You will see God's intentions and desires through this message. So, come along with me and begin your journey according to the road map.
Defining Purity: A Practical Perspective
When I think about purity in a practical sense, I imagine words like clean, bright, shining, and sanitized. The Scriptures, such as Psalm 51:10, guide us: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." This is one of the foundational Scriptures on the subject of purity.
We've often heard the saying, "Cleanliness is next to godliness." Well, that term is just a cliché with no actual biblical reference. However, let me employ it as a hyperbole to vividly illustrate a train of thought or main theme here.
I think of the days in my childhood when my sisters and I were required to participate in housecleaning every Saturday. We went to school during the week, practiced our instruments, and participated in extra activities, depending on the season. But this one thing was more consistent and unavoidable: cleaning the house.
When my husband and I began a family, we continued this custom with our children. Every Saturday, it was housecleaning day. Everyone, no matter their age, was required to participate. We even made it fun to some extent, playing music and singing as we cleaned from the top of the house to the basement. Every room was dusted, vacuumed, and put in order. Laundry and even the cars were washed, and the lawn was mowed on Saturdays.
The process was intentional: to sanitize the house and unite to accomplish work that benefited the whole. We were sticklers about the house’s cleanliness and taught the children that if the work is left undone, the house becomes unsanitary, cluttered, and dusty, inviting pests and lingering odors.
After we finished cleaning the house, the children could go out to play while my husband and I sat back and admired our work. Each cleaning day brought us satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment.
Twice a year, we performed a deep clean of the house. Oh, was this intense! I would send the whole family to my in-laws while giving the place a thorough going-over. I wanted everything not included in the weekly cleanings to be cleaned and polished during this time. I wiped down windows and blinds, laundered curtains, scrubbed walls, shampooed carpets, and dusted ceilings. Nothing was left untouched during this season. When the family returned, it felt like we had a brand-new house.
Every house has an exterior, comprising windows, a front door, outside walls, and a roof, all of which must be maintained. The interior features rooms with furniture, decorated for comfort, where we lounge, eat, and entertain guests. However, we all have rooms in our houses where visitors are not allowed. These private spaces in our houses are kept for only those who are intimately connected., and no one can legally enter our houses without an invitation. I will show you how all of this relates to our walk with God.
The House of God: A Visual Metaphor
Imagine our lives as houses in need of continual cleansing. Our heavenly Father, as the Master Cleaner, regenerates and purifies our house. Consider the profound cleansing process—weekly and bi-annual deep cleans—as a metaphor for the spiritual purification we undergo. God rejoices in the work of purification, delighting in our transformed selves. Purity was the Father’s original intent for His creation, for there is no impurity in Him. He made us for Himself and His pleasure.
When we believe and receive the gospel of Jesus Christ, we experience regeneration: the old version of ourselves passes away, and we become brand new. We may not experience a physical change, but we are changed and made alive spiritually. We are born again, and the Spirit of God comes to dwell within us. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, the Scriptures say we are the temple of the Holy Spirit—the house of God. As I described our physical house, let's explore how it correlates with our spiritual house. Our spiritual dwelling comprises three integral parts: the spirit, soul, and body. Picture our body as the exterior of the house, encompassing skin that serves as descriptive walls, bones forming a sturdy foundation, hair functioning as the roof, and eyes and ears acting as windows. Now, shift your focus to the soul, characterized by thoughts, emotions, and our will. It resembles the furniture within, providing comfort and entertainment. Lastly, our spirit corresponds to the private rooms in the house, reserved exclusively for an intimate connection with God. But God sees it all—our physical and spiritual house. He allows us to see the natural expressions of life to give us spiritual definition and revelation. Therefore, just as a natural house continually receives a good cleaning, the house of God is to perform the continual and intentional work of cleansing.
Defining Purity: A Spiritual Perspective
Purity extends beyond mere cleanliness; it is a spiritual journey. Delve into Merriam-Webster's definitions of pure: “unmixed with any other matter; …containing nothing that does not properly belong” and purity: “the quality or state of being pure: freedom from impurities; …freedom from guilt or sin.”[i]
In the beginning, Adam and Eve were pure. They were innocent, sinless, free from guilt or evil. They were free of contamination and defilement. The Bible says in Genesis 2:25 that they were naked and were not ashamed. They were unashamed because they were clothed with the radiance and glory of God. Selah (which means “pause and think about this”).
We must understand that God’s original intent was to have a relationship with Adam. The name Adam means “mankind.” Adam was holy because God is holy and can’t relate to evil. All of humanity was created to host the glory of God, to know no evil, to prosper, to multiply, and to have dominion in the earth. However, the deception of the serpent undermined God's plan and caused Eve to sin. Consequently, God had to remove the glory with which humanity had been clothed.
A baby in the womb knows no evil. It’s pure and without blame, innocent and without sin. However, as soon as that baby is born into this world, it’s subject to the curse pronounced by God. In Genesis 3:17, God spoke to Adam and cursed the ground because Adam disobeyed God. All disobedience to the Word or command of God is sin. Although the child isn’t at fault, it is affected by Adam’s sin that resulted in a fallen world and the influence of the deceiver.
Many are aware of a dichotomy of beliefs regarding the nature of purity. In some circles, there’s a belief that holds the outward appearance of humanity as synonymous with purity. Regrettably, this religion, which comprises ceremonies, lacks relevance or the power to transform. The concept of purity tied to an outward appearance originates from being clothed by creation and not the Creator. Therefore, how can a person’s outward appearance align with the definition of purity?
The truth is, God looks at the purity of man’s heart. No man can know what is in a man’s or a woman’s heart unless God reveals it. Neither does holiness come from man’s outward appearance but from God alone. Therefore, what man sees in his outward appearance isn’t what God pursues. So, how can anyone be holy and pure based on outward appearance? I believe the proof is in the pudding. The evidence shows that it is not possible.
Examine the Word in 1 Timothy 4:12, which speaks about setting an example for believers—in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. This verse emphasizes one's conduct. When we’re pure in spirit, our conduct, attitudes, and faithfulness to the Word and the people of God will be on display.
We cannot be holy without a savior to redeem this fallen world from the curse. There was no other way except for a pure sacrifice to atone for Adam and Eve’s sin. God knew we couldn’t save ourselves. He looked all over for a pure vessel but found none. So, He poured Himself into a body, and Jesus was born into the world to save us.
Through the finished work of the cross of Christ Jesus, we receive salvation and are no longer subject to the curse. That’s good news, right? However, salvation marks the beginning of the journey back to being clothed in glory through purity, innocence, and holiness. Wherefore, God is undertaking a spiritual renovation of our house in preparation to receive glory for the end-time. He desires to reorganize the furniture and transform the intimate places to purify us completely—spirit, soul, and ultimately, body. Are you willing to go the distance? Let’s take a look at where we are on the crossroad.
Crossroad—New Beginnings
This is your starting point on the road to purity. Many of us have found ourselves at this juncture multiple times. Embarking on a new beginning is a process that God desires for us as we navigate through different times and seasons. Regardless of where you currently stand in your walk with the Lord, initiating a fresh start is a positive endeavor. Starting over doesn't erase past experiences; instead, each new beginning enhances the wisdom gained from those very experiences. You comprehensively grasp God's original intent for His creation and your ultimate purpose. God has specifically called you to Himself so that you can intimately connect with Him as His beloved. You recognize that when you were born into this world, you were innocent but also bound by a fallen world until your transformative born-again experience made you new.
Now, at this initial stage of your journey, you begin to perceive the world, the church, and your walk with God from a deeper perspective. Don't be surprised when your family and friends observe a noticeable change in you. Your surroundings appear brighter, and your vision is clearer. You have undergone a profound (deep) cleansing, my friend. God is attentively observing the transformative work He has accomplished within you and is pleased to continue along this road with you. It's important to recognize that God cherishes you and has called, saved, healed, and delivered you from the devil's traps. His love for you is eternal. As you embark on this journey, take courage and don't be afraid. Always remember that God is with you and will never leave you. The enemy may try to sway you from this path, but remember that he is a deceiver and has already been defeated. You're protected under the shelter of the Almighty, cleansed by the blood of Jesus. You have been given protection through His grace, and the Holy Spirit dwells within you. Jesus holds all power and authority, and you are united with Him. You possess everything you need to succeed as you walk alongside the Lord on this path of purity.
