Sometimes the smallest voices are the mightiest – and the wisest!
The Kingdom of the Refrigerator is in a full-blown, cap-popping frenzy. Their king, the great and mighty Pumpkin, has met his fate at the Thanksgiving table. Next order of business? Find a new ruler. Could it be the pungent (but very fancy) Cheese? The big, loud Ketchup who just can't keep his cap on? Or perhaps the exotic Lychee?
Everyone is convinced they deserve to rule the chilly, frosty kingdom, and they are not keeping quiet about it. Except one tiny, dented, very-much-on-sale can of Peas. But if the groceries don't stop arguing long enough to listen, none of them will get their hands on the shiny new title!

The Kingdom of the Refrigerator is a laugh-out-loud picture book in which the contents of the fridge come alive, each voicing an opinion on who should be the next king or queen, since King Pumpkin had to vacate the position due to being an integral part of Thanksgiving dinner. King Pumpkin didn't exit the role quietly. He had a final message for the cheese, and it seemed fitting; the cheese did have green, moldy-looking lines. Was the character a Blue cheese? A Sage Derby? I'm guessing the former, but I'm sure many kids will call that cheese "rotten."
There was much to love about The Kingdom of the Refrigerator. First, the artist did a phenomenal job breathing life into common fridge items. Their expressions clearly matched the tone on each page. Page after page, the illustrations and the dialogue made me smile. What until you see the "food fight" and what occurs when the fridge door opens! Discover why the Lychee didn't think Banana was royalty material. See if you agree with Mustard on why Ketchup isn't right for the majestic role, either. Pick your winner before the story concludes and see if your grocery item wins the coveted title!
The Kingdom of the Refrigerator is jam-packed with amusing scenes in both the script and the images, and it offers more than a few laughs. The story teaches kids the importance of working together and the power of helping others. It also paints a wonderful picture of why it's important to elect someone who has their voters' best interests at heart.
The Kingdom of the Refrigerator is listed for kids 4-8 years on Amazon. That is an appropriate age for story comprehension. However, you can also use the images to teach kids the names of things or even their colors. The story does have several refrigerator staples but also features groceries that might stump kids. For example, the cheese might trip kids up. For me, I have no idea what a lychee is. I was also a bit confused why the newly crowned king was in the fridge. I have never heard of anyone storing this item in the refrigerator. (Omitting name to avoid spoilers.)
The Kingdom of the Refrigerator is a very entertaining picture book and can entertain multiple age groups. I recommend adding the book to your library, home, or classroom.
