In a brightly illustrated forest with a lake of swirly fluorescent colors, a little frog carried a unique woven sack that held a treat in a small tin-foil pack. The sack's contents caught the interest of a pike (fish), a stork, and a wolf. When they asked what the shiny object was, the frog repeated the same line to each, saying it was his treasure and calling it a "Jumperell." Neither animal had the faintest inkling what a "Jumperell" was, and instead of the frog enlightening them, things took a magical turn. One by one, the animals' appearances changed. Their coloring shifted. They grew new features and lost other ones. The new version of themselves did not amuse them, but the frog was, and I'm sure many kids will find it humorous, too.
During a dream sequence, the frog gets a taste of his own medicine. He loses his ribbit for another animal sound. His body takes on a new shape, leading to a funny scene with some fungus. Kids might ROFL as they watch the frog roll down the page.
The Jumperell is a whimsically drawn, rhyming story that'll make your child smile and possibly question what's real. Did the frog really change the animals' bodies? Was the Jumperell real after all? Read the story and decide for yourself. The suggested reading age is 3-9 years. For story comprehension, that is a perfect age range. Kids under 3 might not be able to follow the storyline, but they might enjoy the fluorescent-colored illustrations. The artwork absolutely captures the eye!
The Jumperell came very close to scoring five stars. I loved the artwork, of course, and the unique storyline. The frog's imagination was magical, and I was very curious, like the animals, what was in the tin-foil container. However, there were inconsistencies in how the animals' initial dialogue was presented: either entirely in italics or partially. That small issue only cost the story 1/2 a point.
I recommend reading The Jumperell. It's unlike anything you've ever read before!
