She recites the location of the water sources that survive the dry season. She explains exactly which red berries will stop a fever and which ones will stop your heart. She chants the rhythm of the hunt. When to freeze, when to run, where to strike the great-horned bison to ensure a clean kill.
Her listeners are rapt. They are not being entertained. They are being programmed. Their survival depends entirely on their ability to upload this data into their own minds. There is no cloud backup. There is no written manual. There is only the fragile, biological wetware of the human brain. If the elder dies before the lesson is learned, the tribe dies with her.
This scene, repeated in a thousand caves across ten thousand years, is where the history of media actually begins. It is the original broadcast. And it reveals something fundamental about us. We are the only species that has figured out how to liberate information from our DNA.
Thirteen thousand kilometres south-east, a different elder, a different war against oblivion.
A woman is walking a line across country that looks, to an outsider, like nothing. Red dirt, dry grass, a ridge in the distance. She is singing as she walks. The song names a waterhole she has never seen with her own eyes, a stand of trees where a particular animal should be at this time of year, the place where her grandmotherās grandmother turned south to avoid a rock that splits the foot of a careless child. The song is the map. The map is the song. If she stops singing, the country goes dark.
Aboriginal Australian songlines are, on any honest reading, the longest continuous oral tradition on earth. Sixty thousand years, maybe more, and still carrying live information about water and food and safe ground. This is not the cave in France caught on camera. This is a parallel technology of survival, running on the same principle: a human mouth, a human memory, a listener who cannot afford to mishear. Older than the cave paintings. Still working.
The point is not that Europe had its elder and Australia had hers too, as if we were drawing up matched pairs. The point is that the oral meme is not a European invention that happened to get photographed first. It is a species-wide solution to the same species-wide problem. Wherever humans had to remember or die, they built a voice to remember with.
A bear knows how to hibernate because its genes tell it to. A spider weaves a web because the blueprint is written in its cells. But a human child knows how to make fire not because they were born with the knowledge, but because an idea jumped from one mind to another.
This is the birth of the meme. Long before internet cats or viral dances, the meme was a survival tool. It was the invisible package of information that could leap across the gap between two skulls and take root in a new host.
The second replicator
For a long time, we didnāt have a good name for this. We called it ātradition,ā or āculture,ā or āfolklore.ā We treated it as something soft. A collection of habits and stories that decorated human life but didnāt really drive it.
Then, in 1976, a biologist named Richard Dawkins looked at human culture and saw the same brutal logic he saw in nature.
Dawkins was writing a book called The Selfish Gene, and he was trying to explain how evolution works. His core argument was that biology isnāt really about the survival of the individual animal. Itās about the survival of the gene. The gene is the āreplicator,ā the unit of information that wants to copy itself. You and I are just āsurvival machinesā, elaborate robots built by our genes to carry them safely into the next generation. Once we reproduce, from the geneās perspective, we are disposable.
But as he looked around at the human world, Dawkins noticed something strange. We do things that donāt make sense for our genes. We use birth control. We become monks and take vows of celibacy. We die for flags or ideologies. We spend our resources on art and music instead of just food and shelter.
Clearly, there was another replicator at work. Another kind of information was fighting for survival, using our brains as its ecosystem.
He needed a name for it. He wanted a word that sounded like āgeneā but conveyed the idea of imitation. He looked to the Greek word mimeme (that which is imitated) and shortened it. Meme.
Today, the word has been hijacked by the internet to mean a funny picture with text. But Dawkinsā definition was much broader and much more powerful. A meme is any unit of culture that can be passed from person to person by imitation.
A catchy tune is a meme. The recipe for sourdough bread is a meme. The idea of democracy is a meme. The custom of shaking hands is a meme. The concept of God is a meme.
Just like a gene, a meme is selfish. It doesnāt care about you. It doesnāt care if it makes you happy, or rich, or safe. It only cares about one thing: getting copied.
If a meme is catchy, useful, or frightening enough, it will spread. If it is boring, complicated, or forgettable, it will die. This is natural selection, but itās not happening in a swamp or a forest. Itās happening in the grey matter of your brain.
I was intrigued by this book's title and tagline, and the way that ideas spread in the modern age. It was an interesting book to read, and while I didn't agree with all of it, I still found it worth reading.
The book starts with an anecdote about late night scrolling. It's something many of us are guilty of, and can definitely relate to the feeling that it created in the author. Throughout the book, the author weaves together historical events, cultural descriptions, anecdotes, philosophical musings, and current events. I definitely learned a lot of interesting historical tidbits from the book, so that alone made it worth reading.
Parts of the book seem kind of bleak, especially when it's talking about algorithms and apps. It made me think of a song called "Hymn of Axiom." Parts of the book are definitely a little bit unsettling, especially when it makes the reader realize just how easy it is to get sucked down rabbit holes and lose time (and sometimes even pieces of ourselves) due to our feeds.
The writing style is easy to follow. Everyone once in while it is peppered with questions that allow the reader to pause and reflect - they aren't necessarily reflection questions, but just seeing the question mark in a few spots sometimes made me stop and think a little more deeply, whether or not that was intentional.
Towards the end it gets a little more optimistic and future-thinking, providing ways to reclaim our own identity in a digital age. It also brings up the idea of creativity - something that can be hard to cultivate in a digital age when it's so easy to copy and use AI. But it's something that's so important to keeping our humanity.
This book is worth reading for anyone who's interested in how the modern spread of information affects us as humans.
