Not having read a poetry book in about a year, I was excited when I came across this one. I expected the new types of poems that are short, even a sentence long, with sublime writing but without most of the theatrics of classic poetry, so I was hopeful. Well, my hopes were dashed. This is not to say that the book is terrible. It is just that it disappointed me as it was merely a collection of quotes and notes. Some were poetic, but others sounded like great social media posts.
Even though The Good Poet by K. D. Gates was not at the writing standard I anticipated, it was a soothing read. It was like reading tweets from someone who had something significant to say. You know those people or pages you search for when you're in a particular mood? You read their content to laugh, update on some controversial matters, or simply lighten up your mood. This book read like a page that always has uplifting messages. Although it had its exceptional moments, I still think it would qualify more as a light motivational self-help book.
As a result, I would recommend it to those who are not fans of the various devices at work in poetry because this book would be a good introduction to the genre. You can read it in sections as the book is divided into themes that each contain short pieces of a few lines that relate to the subject. This way, you can soak in each subject and absorb what is relevant to you.
If you do not enjoy reading things related to religion, though, you might be uncomfortable with the read as it starts right off the bat with Christian evangelism and reflections. And the theme continues throughout the book. There is also reference to various forms of abuse and descriptions of the emotional scars caused by sexual violence that can open wounds so please choose what is best for you.
