Prologue
Annalea had just made either the best decision of her life or the worst. She cradled her baby as the tiny girl, bundled in her arms, remained asleep despite the trainâs thunderous noise beneath them. Remarkable, but entirely in Louisaâs character, Annalea thought. Perched on a wrought iron bench bolted to the freight carâs interior, Annaleaâs heart raced. Wind and snow battered the moving locomotive but failed to slow it down. It pushed through the dark, wintry countryside with relentless force, crawling steadily across the winding stretch of forest and frozen marshes. Is this as fast as it can go? She thought.
The trainâs engineer was no doubt unaware of his unintentional human cargo. His route was a tedious overnight trek eastward with no stops. Annalea had hopped aboard moments earlier, just before the train pulled away from the village station. Her hip ached from the lunge sheâd taken to scramble up into an open freight car, all the while her tiny baby in her arms. After making it aboard, she looked back, fear flooding every breath. Now, sitting on the bench and taking in their cold, loud, harsh surroundings, a new question flipped in her mind: Had he followed?
She rose to peer out the heavy sliding door. Upon entry sheâd tried to shut it, but it hadnât budgedâit was heavy metal that opened only from the outside. Theyâd have to endure the harsh wind churning through the cold metal box like a vortex. She sheltered Louisa in her arms as she leaned out and squinted into the darkness. No irregular motion stirred in the bushes beyond the track. The ground sped beneath them. Suddenly, they were on a bridge and the landscape dropped at least fifty feet under them. The train slowed to tackle the rickety structure, which carried it across with sturdy determination. She backed away and returned to the chilly seat in the carâs corner, comforting Louisa with a gentle hush. The baby was fineâwarm and protected. The hush was more habit than necessity. Louisa had endured more than most babies should.
As the train rounded a bend beyond the bridge, Annalea thought about their future. Was this it? Were they really clear? Despite no signs otherwise, doubt crept into her mind. Like an inmate dreaming of freedom, with only a vast channel beyond the prison walls to cross, she thought, now, having jumped into the wavy waters, their next steps were ones she hadnât truly envisioned reaching. She knew the trek would test her deeply, with only her breast to feed her child and a few gulps of water and pieces of bread to sustain herself. Theyâd have immense challenges getting by. They would have to start over. Life would be hard.
Nothing like what they had just left, she thought.
Then she heard it. A snuff and a huffing sound outside the open car door. She froze as though her stillness would eliminate the possibility of what was happening from becoming real. Her eyes darted to the doorway where, sure enough, a puff of hot breath appeared and vanished like a ghost in the wind. Then, the arch of a giant creatureâs back and shoulders appeared, running alongside the measured train. Light from a passing torch illuminated it briefly and confirmed Annaleaâs worst-case scenario.
The bear appeared. White, wild, and enormous. It lumbered with incredible stamina alongside the creeping train. A giant paw landed on the carbody with a heavy thud. Annalea slid to the ground as young Louisa grew restless in her arms. The baby cried out in distress, and her mother moved to cower in the corner by the bench as the bear approached the open door. There was nowhere to hide. It must have followed us the whole way from the station, Annalea thought. She pictured the bear running alongside the train, then walking across the bridge behind the caboose, catching its breath before continuing its relentless pursuit. Now the bear could come aboard while Annalea remained helpless inside the carâa cornered bird in a cage. Its paws thundered against the floor as the bear stood up, its menacing form filling nearly half the space.
The bear had found them.

A Haunting and Unforgettable Read
The Clearing in the Forest pulled me in from the very first page and held me there until the end. Set in 1902, it follows Annalea, a woman living in isolation after her abusive husband mysteriously disappears right before she gives birth. Alone in a remote cabin surrounded by endless woods and snow, she must find the courage to survive labor and motherhood on her own. Just when it seems she might find a fragile peace, something enormous and white moves through the trees, a bear that watches, follows, and waits. It does not take long for Annalea to realize that this is no ordinary beast.
The writing is both beautiful and chilling. You can almost feel the sting of winter air and the weight of silence in the forest. Every scene feels alive with tension, from the sound of snapping branches to the flicker of torchlight against the snow. What I loved most was how the author balanced raw survival with an emotional undercurrent of motherhood, loss, and resilience. Annaleaâs strength, even when she is terrified, gives the story real heart.
There is also an eerie sense of mystery that grows with every chapter. The strange hum in the forest, the dark chasm that appears without warning, and the supernatural force that seems to twist everything familiar into something monstrous all build a world that feels both mythic and deeply human.
By the end, I was completely invested in Annaleaâs fight for freedom. The story becomes more than just a horror tale. It is about transformation, facing your past, and finding light in the darkest places. The Clearing in the Forest is haunting, emotional, and beautifully written. If you enjoy atmospheric stories that blur the line between fear and hope, this book will stay with you long after you finish it.
