Theo Carterâs phone buzzed unexpectedly, emitting a sound that wasnât quite a ding or a chime but something softer, more insistent. He paused mid-step on the cracked pavement of Elmwood Avenue, tugging his phone out of his hoodie pocket. The app icon seemed to shimmer against the screen: Arcana.
He frowned, a skeptical eyebrow arching. He didnât recall downloading it. Theo was careful about what he installedâhe couldnât afford another incident like last summer when Rico had tricked him into downloading an app that plastered every screen with glittery cat memes. He pressed the icon, half expecting it to crash or sprout some ridiculous pop-up ad. Instead, the screen filled with swirling golden symbols, intricate patterns that moved as though alive.
âWhat theâŚ?â he muttered, glancing over his shoulder as if someone might explain. The street was eerily quiet, the last traces of daylight casting long shadows. He tapped the screen again, but the app remained unresponsive, the golden symbols looping endlessly like an ancient screensaver.
Strange as it was, Theoâs attention was already fraying. The day had been long, made worse by Derek McAllisterâs snide comments during gym and Mrs. Callahanâs not-so-subtle jab about his incomplete math homework. Sighing, he shoved the phone back into his pocket and veered off the main path, aiming for the only place that ever felt like a refugeâGianniâs Pizzeria.
The little brass bell above the door tinkled as Theo pushed inside, greeted by a wave of warmth and the familiar smell of garlic, melted cheese, and just a hint of burnt crust. It was a small place, but the walls were covered in autographed photos, checkered tablecloths, and mismatched fairy lights that flickered lazily, as though they couldnât quite be bothered.
âAbout time,â came Ricoâs voice, loud and unapologetic as always. He was sprawled across the booth in the far corner, arms flung dramatically over the backrest. Beside him, Emma Torres barely looked up from her book, her dark curls forming a curtain around her face. Across from them, Oliver âOllieâ Kim was tinkering with something Theo couldnât quite make out, his thick-rimmed glasses perched precariously on his nose.
âDidnât think youâd actually show,â Rico teased, smirking as Theo slid into the booth. âThought youâd be at home crying about McAllister.â
âSays the guy who failed every pull-up today,â Theo shot back, earning a snicker from Emma.
âFair point,â Rico conceded, unbothered. âSo, whatâs up? You look like you saw a ghost⌠or Mrs. Callahan outside of class.â
Theo ignored him and pulled his phone out. âHave you guys ever seen something like this?â He placed the device on the table, the Arcana icon glowing faintly. The golden symbols resumed their mesmerizing dance the moment it was touched.
Emma finally set her book down, frowning. âWeird. What is it?â
âNo idea,â Theo admitted. âIt just showed up. I tried deleting it, but itâs like itâs stuck.â
âMaybe itâs malware,â Ollie offered, peering over the screen. âSome apps install themselves to steal your data. Let me have a look.â
Before Theo could hand it over, the symbols on the screen shifted, arranging themselves into a map. A tiny golden dot pulsed steadily in the center, sending out faint ripples with every beat.
âWhoa,â Rico whispered. âWhat is that?â
Theo frowned. âLooks like a map⌠butâŚâ His voice trailed off as realization dawned. âWait, thatâs here. Thatâs Gianniâs.â
Emma leaned closer, tracing the screen with her finger. âItâs pointing to the back. Near the arcade.â
âNo way,â Rico said, already halfway out of the booth. âWeâre checking this out.â
The arcade had seen better days. Once the pride of Gianniâs, it now stood neglected, the pinball machines coated in a fine layer of dust. Faintly glowing neon signs flickered weakly, casting the room in uneven light. The hum of the kitchen faded as Theo, Emma, Ollie, and Rico crept deeper into the space.
Theo checked the app again. The glowing arrow on the map pulsed brighter, pointing directly at a pinball machine labeled âStarburst Galaxy.â Its paint was chipped, and one of the flippers hung limp, but as Theo approached, the app chimed softly. The machine lit up, its lights flashing erratically.
âThat⌠doesnât look normal,â Emma muttered.
Theo hesitated, then tapped the screen. The symbols swirled faster, and the machine groaned like an ancient beast awakening. With a final screech of metal, it shifted, sliding to the side and revealing a trapdoor embedded in the floor. Its edges glowed faintly, etched with intricate runes that matched the patterns on the app.
âHoly crap,â Rico breathed. âItâs like a real-life video game.â
âDonât touch it,â Emma warned, crouching beside the door to examine the runes. âThese symbols⌠theyâre not random. Theyâre ancient.â
âHow ancient?â Theo asked, his voice hushed.
âOld enough that we probably shouldnât mess with them,â Emma replied, though there was an unmistakable spark of curiosity in her eyes.
Theoâs hand hovered over the handle. His heart was pounding, every instinct screaming at him to back away. But something deeperâa pull he couldnât explainâurged him forward.
âI have to,â he said finally, gripping the handle. âI just⌠I have to.â
The trapdoor creaked open, spilling golden light that bathed the room in a warm glow. A spiral staircase descended into the earth; its steps carved from smooth, polished stone.
Emmaâs breath hitched. âThis is insane.â
Rico grinned; his earlier nervousness replaced by excitement. âAre we doing this or what?â
Ollie, who had been unusually quiet, glanced nervously at the others. âDo we have a choice?â
Theo took the first step, the golden light reflecting in his wide eyes. âLetâs find out.â
One by one, they descended, the pizzeria and its comforting normalcy fading behind them.
The air grew cooler as they descended, the walls of the spiral staircase smooth and gleaming, as if carved from marble. A faint hum, like distant machinery, reverberated through the air. Theo couldnât help but trail his fingers along the wall, feeling the faint vibration beneath his touch. The glow from below grew brighter, spilling up the staircase in pulses, as though the very stones were alive and breathing.
âWhat do you thinkâs down here?â Rico asked, his voice barely above a whisper. âGold? Hidden treasure? Magic pizza ovens?â
Emma shot him a look. âLetâs hope itâs not a dungeon.â
At the bottom of the stairs, the group stepped into a vast underground chamber, and the sight stole Theoâs breath. The room stretched out before them, the ceiling arching high like a cathedral. Strange, glowing symbols covered every surface, their soft light casting shifting patterns across the floor. In the center of the room stood a large circular platform made of polished stone, its edges etched with intricate runes that pulsed faintly.
âOkay,â Ollie said, adjusting his glasses nervously. âThis is⌠not normal.â
Theo stepped forward, drawn toward the platform. As he approached, the symbols on the ground seemed to ripple, rearranging themselves to form a path leading directly to the center. The Arcana app chimed again, and Theo instinctively pulled it out. The map was gone, replaced by a single word flashing in golden letters: Activate.
Theo stared at the word on his phone screen. It pulsed softly, like a heartbeat. He hesitated, glancing at his friends.
âActivate? That sounds⌠ominous,â Emma said, her brow furrowed. She stepped closer to the platform but kept a cautious distance. âAre you sure this is a good idea?â
âIt doesnât exactly scream safety,â Ollie added, adjusting his glasses nervously. His gaze darted between the phone and the glowing platform. âWhat if it triggers something we canât undo?â
Rico, however, was already grinning. âOnly one way to find out,â he said. âCome on, Theo. Youâve come this far. Donât back out now.â
Theo tightened his grip on his phone. The pull heâd felt since opening the app seemed to grow stronger, as though the room itself was urging him forward. He took a deep breath and pressed the word on the screen.
The platform came alive.
The runes around its edge flared to life, shifting and rearranging themselves into patterns that seemed to ripple outward. A low hum filled the air, deep and resonant, vibrating through the floor beneath their feet. The light from the runes grew brighter, and thenâwithout warningâa column of golden energy shot upward from the center of the platform, illuminating the entire chamber.
âWhoa!â Rico stumbled back, shielding his eyes. âWhat did you do?â
Theo didnât answer. His gaze was locked on the column of light, which was now swirling with faint imagesâshapes that looked like doorways, flickering and shifting as though struggling to take form.
Emma grabbed Theoâs arm. âTheo, look!â she said, pointing toward the platform. âSomethingâs happening!â
The column began to stabilize, and a single image emerged within its golden light: a grand, arched doorway made of stone, covered in the same intricate runes that decorated the platform. It hung in the air, impossibly real, its surface shimmering like water.
âIs that⌠a portal?â Ollie whispered; his voice tinged with awe.
Theo stepped closer, drawn to the doorway. The energy radiating from it was almost hypnotic, and for a moment, he forgot the fear thrumming in his chest. He reached out a hand toward the shimmering surface.
âTheo, wait!â Emmaâs voice cut through his trance, snapping him back to reality. She grabbed his wrist before he could touch the doorway. âWe donât know whatâs on the other side.â
âBut weâre supposed to find out,â Theo said, his voice barely above a whisper. He turned to his friends, his expression a mixture of wonder and determination. âThatâs why the app led us here. Itâs why I opened the trapdoor. This⌠this is what it wanted me to see.â
âYeah, well, what if it also wants to get us eaten by whateverâs in there?â Rico quipped, though he was clearly just as intrigued as the others.
Emmaâs grip on Theoâs wrist tightened for a moment before she sighed and let go. âFine,â she said. âBut if youâre going through, weâre coming with you.â
âAll of us?â Ollie asked, his face pale. âAre we sure thatâs a good idea?â
âNope,â Rico said, clapping him on the shoulder. âBut itâs going to make one hell of a story.â
Theo took another deep breath, steeling himself. Then, with one last glance at his friends, he stepped onto the platform. The golden light seemed to embrace him, warm and weightless. The shimmering surface of the portal rippled as he approached, and when he reached out to touch it, his hand passed through as though dipping into water.
He turned back to the others, a nervous smile on his face. âHere goes nothing,â he said, and then he stepped through.
For a moment, there was nothing but light. It surrounded Theo completely, bright and blinding, yet strangely comforting. He felt weightless, as though he were floating in a vast, endless sea. And then, just as quickly as it had enveloped him, the light vanished.
Theo stumbled forward, his feet hitting solid ground. He blinked, his eyes adjusting to the dim glow of his new surroundings. He was standing in another chamber, similar to the one heâd just left but larger, grander. The walls were lined with towering columns, each one carved with intricate symbols that glowed faintly in the dim light. At the far end of the room stood a massive stone archway, its surface shimmering with the same golden energy as the portal heâd just stepped through.
A moment later, the rest of the group appeared behind him, one by one. Rico was first, tumbling out of the portal with a whoop. âThat was awesome!â he exclaimed, looking around in wide-eyed wonder. âWhere are we?â
Emma was next, her expression a mixture of awe and suspicion. She stepped forward cautiously, scanning the room for any signs of danger. âI have no idea,â she admitted. âBut it feels⌠ancient. Like itâs been here forever.â
Ollie was the last to step through, clutching his phone tightly as though it were a lifeline. He looked around nervously, his eyes lingering on the glowing symbols. âThis doesnât look like any place Iâve ever seen,â he said. âAre we still under Gianniâs?â
âI donât think so,â Theo said. He couldnât explain how he knew, but he was certain they were no longer beneath the pizzeria. This place felt differentâotherworldly.
The golden light from the portal flickered and then faded, leaving the room in a soft, ambient glow. The group stood in silence for a moment, taking in their surroundings. Then, without warning, a low rumble echoed through the chamber, shaking the ground beneath their feet.
âUh, what was that?â Rico asked, his grin faltering.
Before anyone could answer, the stone archway at the far end of the room began to glow brighter, and the shimmering surface within it rippled like water. A figure stepped through the archway, its silhouette tall and imposing. The group froze, their eyes locked on the stranger as they emerged from the portal.
It was a man, dressed in flowing robes that seemed to shimmer with the same golden light as the symbols on the walls. His face was stern, his features sharp and angular. He carried a staff in one hand, its tip glowing faintly with a pulsing light.
âYou shouldnât be here,â the man said, his voice deep and commanding. His eyes swept over the group, lingering on Theo. âAnd yet⌠you are.â
Theo swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. âWho are you?â he managed to ask, his voice barely steady.
The man studied him for a moment before answering. âMy name is Elias Ward,â he said. âAnd this⌠is the Nexus.â
The tension in the room was palpable as Elias Ward stepped closer, his staff tapping against the stone floor with each deliberate stride. âThe Nexus is a place of balance,â he said, his gaze fixed on Theo. âA sanctuary where the threads of magic and reality converge.â
âMagic?â Emma repeated, her voice laced with disbelief. âYouâre saying magic is real?â
Eliasâs lips twitched into a faint smile. âIt always has been,â he said. âThough it is hidden, for good reason.â
Rico, ever the skeptic, crossed his arms. âSo, what does that make us? Chosen ones or something?â
Eliasâs expression grew serious. âNot all of you,â he said. His eyes locked on Theo, and the weight of his gaze was almost tangible. âBut you⌠you are different.â
Theoâs throat felt dry. âWhy me?â he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Elias didnât answer immediately. Instead, he raised his staff, and the glowing symbols on the walls flared to life. The room seemed to shift, the air crackling with energy. âBecause,â Elias said, his voice reverberating through the chamber, âyou are a Realmkeeperâthe first in generations.â
Theo stared at Elias, his heart pounding. âA Realmkeeper?â he repeated, the word foreign yet heavy, as though it carried the weight of a hundred lifetimes. âWhat does that even mean?â
Elias didnât answer right away. Instead, he lowered his staff, tapping it gently against the stone floor. The runes etched across the walls shifted, their light coalescing into a single swirling pattern that hovered in the air above the platform. The image shimmered and reformed, revealing what looked like a map, sprawling and intricate, with glowing points scattered across its surface.
âThe Realmkeeper is more than just a title,â Elias said, his voice steady but laced with gravity. âIt is a legacyâa bond with the threads of magic that hold our worlds together. You, Theo, have the power to sense these threads, to weave them into pathways that connect realms. But with that power comes a responsibility to protect the balance between them.â
Theoâs mind raced, trying to process what he was hearing. âYouâve got the wrong person,â he said, shaking his head. âI donât have powers. Iâm justâjust a normal guy.â
Elias fixed him with a piercing gaze. âDo you think the Gate opened itself? Or that the symbols responded to anyone else in this room? You have already begun to awaken your abilities, even if you donât realize it.â
Emma stepped forward; her brow furrowed. âOkay, hold on. If Theoâs so special, why didnât anyone tell him about this before? How does someone just stumble into being a Realmkeeper?â
âIt has been centuries since the last Realmkeeper walked these halls,â Elias admitted, his tone heavy with regret. âThe knowledge was lost, buried alongside the ruins of the old Nexus. Until now, the Gate has remained dormant, waiting for the one destined to wield its power.â
âGreat,â Rico muttered, crossing his arms. âSo, heâs some kind of chosen one? Classic.â
Theo ignored him, his eyes locked on the glowing map above the platform. Something about it called to him, the lines and points almost familiar, as if heâd seen them before in a dream. He stepped closer, reaching out instinctively, and the map shifted, zooming in on one of the glowing points. A faint hum filled the air, and a soft, golden thread emerged from the map, connecting to the platform beneath his feet.
âWhat is that?â Ollie whispered; his voice barely audible.
âThe thread of a realm,â Elias said, watching Theo closely. âA fragile connection, maintained by the balance you are meant to uphold. Without it, our worlds would fracture, collapsing into chaos.â
Theo felt the threadâs warmth as it wrapped around his hand, its energy pulsing softly like a heartbeat. The sensation was overwhelmingâcomforting and terrifying all at once. âWhat happens if the thread breaks?â he asked.
Eliasâs expression darkened. âThen both realms will suffer. And that is precisely what some would seek to achieve.â
The air grew colder, the light in the chamber dimming as a shadow seemed to pass through the room. Eliasâs grip on his staff tightened, and his voice lowered. âThere are those who would use the threads for their own gain, tearing open gateways and unleashing destruction in their wake. That is why the Nexus existsâto safeguard the balance. And that is why you must learn to control your power, Theo, before it is too late.â
Theoâs chest tightened, the enormity of Eliasâs words sinking in. He wanted to argue, to insist that he wasnât capable of handling this kind of responsibility. But deep down, he couldnât shake the feeling that Elias was rightâthat this strange, terrifying power was somehow a part of him.
âHow do I learn?â he asked finally, his voice trembling.
Eliasâs expression softened, and he extended a hand toward Theo. âYou have already taken the first step by coming here. But the path ahead will not be easy. There is much to learn, and even more to unlearn. You will need strength, focus, and the trust of those who stand beside you.â
Theo glanced at his friends. Emmaâs determined expression, Ricoâs nervous grin, and Ollieâs wide-eyed curiosity reminded him that he wasnât facing this alone. He took a deep breath, then reached out to clasp Eliasâs hand.
âGood,â Elias said, a faint smile breaking through his stern exterior. âYour training begins now.â
The light in the chamber flared once more, and the map above the platform dissolved into a rain of golden sparks. The energy around them shifted, the runes on the walls dimming as the room seemed to settle back into stillness. Elias turned toward the far end of the chamber, where another archway loomed, its surface shimmering faintly with the same golden light.
âThis way,â he said, motioning for them to follow. âThere is much you need to seeâand even more to understand.â
Theo hesitated for only a moment before stepping off the platform, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and anticipation. Whatever lay ahead, he knew there was no turning back now.
The archway shimmered before them, its golden surface rippling gently, as if it were alive and waiting. Theo hesitated at the threshold, his friends gathering behind him. The faint hum of magic in the air was almost soothing now, like a distant lullaby pulling him forward.
âIs it just me, or does everything in this place feel like it might eat us?â Rico muttered, craning his neck to peer into the glow. His nervous grin couldnât quite mask the edge of unease in his voice.
âIf it does, youâd probably be the tastiest,â Emma replied dryly, though her hand lingered on Theoâs shoulder for an extra second. âYou okay?â
Theo nodded, though his heart felt like it might beat straight out of his chest. âYeah,â he lied. âIâm fine.â
Elias paused just inside the archway, his robes catching the golden light like molten silk. âStep forward,â he said, his voice calm but commanding. âThis path is for all of you now.â
One by one, they crossed the threshold. The moment Theo stepped through, the world shifted. It was like being plunged underwaterâhis ears popped, the air thickened, and for a split second, his vision blurred. Then it all cleared, and he gasped at the sight before him.
They stood in what could only be described as a city carved from starlight. Towering spires of crystal rose high into the dark expanse above, their surfaces refracting light in a kaleidoscope of colors. Streets paved with smooth, luminescent stone stretched out in every direction, lined with arching bridges and flowing streams that sparkled like liquid gold. Floating lanterns bobbed gently along the streets, casting warm pools of light that danced with every movement.
âWhoa,â Rico breathed, his earlier bravado replaced by pure awe. âI feel like I just stepped into a movie.â
Theo could only nod, his words caught somewhere between his chest and his throat. Heâd thought the chamber beneath the pizzeria was magicalâthis was something else entirely. The air itself felt alive, buzzing faintly against his skin.
âThis is the Nexus,â Elias said, his voice soft but resonant. âA sanctuary for those who walk between realms, hidden from the eyes of the mundane world.â
âItâs⌠beautiful,â Emma murmured, her gaze sweeping across the cityscape. âBut why does it feel so empty?â
âThe Nexus has slumbered for centuries,â Elias replied, his staff tapping softly against the glowing stone beneath their feet. âMost of its inhabitants are gone now, driven away by the Collapse and the dangers that followed. Only a few remainâthose tasked with protecting what little balance we have left.â
As if on cue, a figure emerged from the shadows of a nearby archway. It was an elderly woman with silvery hair that flowed down her back like a waterfall. She wore long, deep-blue robes adorned with faintly glowing runes, and her sharp eyes flicked between Elias and the newcomers.
âYouâve brought outsiders,â she said, her tone clipped. âUntrained, untested, and likely to cause trouble.â
âThey are here because the Nexus has called them,â Elias replied evenly. âThe Realmkeeper has awakened.â
The womanâs gaze fixed on Theo, narrowing as though she were sizing him up. âHim? A child?â
âHey,â Theo said, his nerves bubbling into irritation. âIâm standing right here.â
The woman raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. âThen perhaps you can explain how a child barely out of his mundane life plans to wield the power of the Nexus without unraveling it entirely.â
Theo opened his mouth, then closed it again, at a loss for words. Rico, however, stepped forward, planting his hands on his hips. âListen, ladyâhe just found out heâs a Realmkeeper, like, five minutes ago. Maybe cut him some slack?â
âRico,â Emma hissed, grabbing his arm. âNot helping.â
The woman looked at Elias, her expression unreadable. âI hope you know what youâre doing,â she said, before turning and disappearing into the shadows once more.
âCharming,â Rico muttered. âIs everyone here like that?â
âNo,â Elias said. âBut trust is earned here, not given. The Nexus has suffered much, and suspicion lingers like a shadow over its halls.â
They continued walking, the streets winding upward in a gentle spiral toward the tallest spire in the city. As they climbed, Theo couldnât shake the feeling that the city itself was watching them. The floating lanterns seemed to hover a little closer when they passed, and the runes etched into the stones glowed faintly brighter beneath their feet.
At last, they reached the spire. Its entrance was marked by a grand set of double doors, carved with symbols that Theo instinctively recognized as similar to the ones in the chamber beneath Gianniâs. Elias pressed his staff against the doors, and they swung open silently, revealing a vast circular room lined with shelves that stretched from floor to ceiling. Each shelf was filled with books, scrolls, and strange glowing artifacts, their faint light casting intricate patterns across the polished floor.
âThis is the Archive,â Elias said, his voice almost reverent. âIt holds the history of the Nexus and the knowledge of all who have come before. It is here that your training will begin.â
âMy training?â Theo asked, his throat dry. The sheer weight of everything was beginning to press down on him again. âWhat exactly am I supposed to be training for?â
Elias turned to him, his expression grave. âTo control the threads of magic that connect the realms,â he said. âTo open and close gateways without destabilizing the balance. And to face those who would see that balance destroyed.â
âRight,â Theo said, his voice wavering. âAnd, uh, how long does this training take?â
Eliasâs lips twitched in what might have been a smile. âA lifetime,â he said. âBut for now, we start with the basics.â
As Elias led them deeper into the Archive, Theo couldnât help but glance back at the glowing threads still lingering in the corners of his vision. A lifetime, he thought. How was he supposed to handle that? Heâd barely figured out how to survive gym class.
But as they stepped into the heart of the Archive, where a massive table stood surrounded by open books and softly glowing crystals, Theo felt the pull again. It was faint but insistent, a quiet reminder that he was here for a reason. He didnât understand it yet, but somehow, he knew this was where he was meant to be.
âLetâs begin,â Elias said, placing his staff against the table. The crystals flared to life, casting a warm light over the group. âThe Nexus has waited long enough.â
The Arcane Network: Keeper of Realms is a wholesome journey into a world where magic mixes with the paths of its inhabitants.
Theo and his three friends, Emma, Rico, and Ollie, are thrown head-first into a universe filled with enchantment, mystery, and danger.
An ordinary day of hanging out turned into an unexpected adventure. With a new title of Realmskeeper and a mission to protect, Theo and his friends take on the protection role. It's up to them to end the threats, targeting the threads connecting each realm.
The world within The Arcane Network was quite intricate. The reader is pulled into the story immediately with a brief explanation of The Nexus, the threads that connect different realms, and the corruption attacking the threads. The author does a good job of captivating the reader and emphasizing the critical need for this new journey and the need to begin immediately. From the dynamic of the friend group to the mystery of what lies ahead, there are a lot of elements in the beginning that help pull the reader into the story.
With that being said, the story was too repetitive. The youth were immediately thrown into the deep end, which felt way too quick. The group didnât get in-depth training for this dangerous and critical mission that could mean life or death. Theo received some training, but it didnât feel like enough for how vital this mission was said to be. As the characters progress, they are introduced to new elements, such as a pendant, codex, staff, and dagger, to help them along their way. Each character receives something to help Theo; again, it feels like a lack of training. The characters automatically knew everything and how to use the items to help them advance. As the story progresses, they continue to battle, and you see some growth within the group. Still, it became too repetitive because not much was happening to split up each mission. The author could have included additional training elements to help alleviate the overall feeling of the story being too repetitive. The battles were quick, as well; it would have been more engaging had the battles lasted longer, and the reader got the opportunity to see more development of strategy and skill, which would have helped break up the repetitive feeling.
The ending gives a whole lot more, especially with the challenges. Thereâs a greater sense of growth among the group, giving their final battles of the novel a bit more energy. In the end, a lot more excitement hypes the reader up for what else we could expect from the journey.
This book would be a great introduction to someone from a younger audience interested in diving into the fantasy world who doesnât know where to start.
