Keeping the Riverdill farm safe is all in a day’s work for the Riverdill sheriffs in Andrew Johnston’s charming children’s story!
The first thing you need to know about this enchanting story is that Bo is a giant Great Pyrenees. Mr. Quillery is a Northern Bobwhite Quail. Bo is strong and brave. He protects the innocent. Mr. Quillery is quick-witted and wise and a solver of mysteries. Together, Bo and Mr. Quillery protect the Riverdill farm and all its creatures. The twin sheriffs are always alert. Always on duty. Always ready to lend a hand as they spring into action and magical adventures.
Out on patrol one day, Bo and Mr. Quillery notice a mysterious creature from the sky. Is it heading for the Western Quarry? The twin sheriffs have a duty to fulfill and a potential mystery to solve. In fact, the day’s shaping up to be a true adventure as Bo and Mr. Quillery head to the quarry to see what’s what. En route, they encounter a frantic Mrs. Hen. She’s lost one of her chicks. Can the two sheriffs find the little one before it’s too late?
Not to fret. Our dynamic duo is on the job! Bo and Mr. Quillery track the lost chick to the Western Quarry. But something is off. Is this a rescue or a trap? What happens next is a Big Surprise – and a delightful bit of creative and wholesome storytelling. Young readers will eat it up with a spoon.
In fact, this book is Too. Much. Fun! Propelled by superb storytelling and top-notch illustrations, the plot is lithe and agile and will keep young readers on the edge of their seats. Speaking of illustrations, I especially loved the illustrations of Red Eye the longhorn bull and Bo and Mr. Quillery doing a sing-a-long with little chick.
Another plus is the inclusion of sign posts for key characters. The signs identify Species, Class, and Job. For example, Bo and Mr. Quillery’s Species is Great Pyrenees and Northern Bobwhite Quail. Their Class is Hero. Their Job is Twin Sheriffs of the Riverdill Lands. Brilliant!
Bonus points: Valuable life lessons and positive character traits are imparted within these pages. These include teamwork, courage, and loyalty as the twin sheriffs must think quickly to save the lost chick from the villainous Rattlin’ Red and his gang of cut-throat, desperado rattlesnakes!
Warm and whimsical, the tone is energetic and upbeat. Packed with near misses and close calls, there’s plenty of action and adventure to keep young readers turning pages until the very end. It's perfect for fans of Babe: Gallant Pig, The Tale of Despereaux, or Charlotte's Web. I loved it! So will the target audience of young readers ages first through fourth grade.
The Adventures of Bo and Mr. Quillery: The Lost Chick is Book 1 in a twelve-book series. The author explains that Bo’s strength and Mr. Quillery’s intellect highlight their contrasting natures and worldviews while their friendship remains strong. Hence, additional books in the series will be told from alternating POVs featuring the strengths of both main characters. I can’t wait!
