Surrounded by Numbers by Latoshia Martin is an amusing book on math. Unlike the dull and boring texts we usually find in our hands, this book teaches counting in a joyful manner. Math has always been dreaded by children and adults alike. It's because of the dull dry manner it is presented in. Numbers and counting can be fun only when they are taught and shared as fun. Most teachers and parents forget that we are surrounded by numbers in our daily lives. The best way to teach them would be hands on experience for children.
Latoshia has done a marvelous job with this book. She has made counting fun and simple through the daily tasks one does. The characters are relatable and adorable. The family of three children Isaiah, Iry and Nyia with their mother are just like any family with precocious children. They are energetic, vivacious and full of vigor. They accompany their mother who has some errands to run. Doing daily chores Isaiah teaches us counting by finding numbers in and around his neighborhood. Be it counting time at home, pair of socks, counting cars on the road or even people ahead of them in queue. Combined with lovely illustrations this book is a perfect tool to teach the little ones counting and numbers through daily life situations. I recommend this book to all parents and teachers teaching math to the young ones.
I would like to thank Reedsy and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
