Subtle Visions depicts the echo of a yearning heart. Divided into four chapters — rush, split, mist, and flow — it is a collection of poetry that illuminates the vulnerability of love and self-discovery.

i built a colorful life
on a fragmented dream
filled with memories i wanted
with the person i need
and i hope you see
you are a breath of blues
an open field of mute grey
your chords boast a full life
a wild maze of curiosity
delicately woven together
through time and space
i expected a subtle tug
but i collapsed into a soft embrace
you held me together
through restless nights and sunken eyes
your steady voice was my direction
you give me simple pleasures
like decaf in the morning
or chamomile in mid-afternoon
decompressing my anxious mind
leveling the ground beneath my toes
i float in your electric gaze
Subtle Visions by Brittany Campbell is divided into four sections: rush, split, mist, and flow. Campbell uses her own style with presenting her poetry. Each poem includes the first line sitting on the left of the page with the rest of the lines formatted to the right. I enjoyed the emphasis on the first line. It gave those words a strong impact and lead me into the rest of the poem with curiosity.
Campbell's poems are short; an average of six or eight lines. Each poem feels succinct and to the point, allowing the reader to move quickly from thought to thought. I do wish Campbell expanded on some of the poems. The author writes:
"sopped in disdain
obscure clouds decay
molten rays amplify cracks
on the floorboards
where I used to play"
This poem is ominous and mysterious. If Campbell's plan was to leave the reader hungry for more, then she succeeded. However, I think more could have been explored in this poem to really hit the reader hard. Nonetheless, it is seeping with anger and pain.
Other poems in the collection are perfect as they are. Campbell says"
"i took a deep breath
and i wasn't sure
if i was breathing in
or letting go"
This is hands down my favorite of Campbell's poems. I feel how the subject of the poem surrenders to peace. It showcases the need to breathe in to sustain one's self while suffering through anxiety, pain, or fear. But, it also shows someone finally getting peace with the realization that they've let go.
Subtle Visions by Brittany Campbell takes you on a journey of introspection. The collection is soulful and full of many emotions. Readers will enjoy the artwork accompanied by the crisp style of Campbell's writing.
