I had high expectations from the book seeing that it is based on the real life experience of a couple. Dawn and Frederick found love online. They share their love story through a series of screenshots of their messages which have been shared based on the chapter topic.


Their story is adorable. Almost fairy tale like where a DM on Instagram leads to friendship which grows into love and finally a fruitful marriage. When writing from personal perspective I thought that their personal experiences would give us a better learning curve. The book is supposed to be a dating guide for online dating. Supposedly a guide on the online etiquettes, at the same time a step by step walk through the various stages of online dating.


The book begins with a preface and introduction about the conceptualization of the book. Instagram and other social media sites are used regularly by people for dating and friendship. Hence it comes with the danger of scams and being catfished. There are several people who have created fake profiles and scam people for money. Started in The DM by Dawn Dickson-Akpoghene is a dating guide that takes you through an online dating journey based on their personal dating. The fact that they are entrepreneurs resonates throughout the book. Even though its is mentioned that the tips can be useful for all I personally felt that they suited the affluent or those with ample time on hand.


I did not find it helpful in understanding how to put myself out on online platform in search of love. The journey is divided into topics like how to create an attractive profile, how to catch his/her attention, how to be engaging and captivating in conversations and so on. The writing style seems more like a dating guide for teenagers rather than for adults. The fonts used, illustrations and the style of the book in whole did not appeal to me. It would be eye catching for a teen novel or young adult novel. While writing for adults Dawn and Frederick tried to incorporate fun with emojis and different fonts. It might be appealing for others but for me it took away the fun of reading. I found it difficult to concentrate on the text and hence what should have been a pleasant read turned out to be a tedious task.


If you have better concentration skills maybe you would succeed better than me and maybe enjoy it more.
