Specialisms: Autism Perspectives: Musings from the Family of an Autistic Kid

Loved it! 😍

An emotional and inspiring story of a family’s journey with autism filled with the power of faith, hope and love.

“Specialisms: Autism Perspectives” written by Brad Eck is an inspiring story of a family’s unceasing love as they deal with autism. Told mainly from the point of view of the father, this is a book filled with a father’s concern, struggles and sacrifices as he tries to care for his autistic son while also balancing everything to raise his entire family.

Although I have already been exposed to some other materials regarding autism, nothing prepared me for the journey of Brad’s family as they tried to raise Daniel. In this book, I have learned how unique each person truly is, and this is true for those diagnosed with autism. The hardships and challenges faced by Daniel’s family as they tried to understand him and to keep him from harm are almost impossible to do were it not for their steadfast faith in God and their unwavering love for each other.

From the early years of Daniel’s life, this book narrates various incidences that made it very difficult for each family member to look after him. Nothing was ever predictable. All must adjust for the unexpected and many times, the unexpected seemed more and more extreme.

Throughout their struggles, I can’t help but be reminded of God’s love for His children. Though we make mistakes and fail Him again and again, He remains faithful, always doing what is best for those whom He loves.

At our human capacity, however, we do experience times of distress and weakness. And what this book reminds us is that we need to constantly forgive ourselves each time. There is no room for giving up here, only in persevering to the very end.

For those who will read this book, you will find a very organized format to help you. There is a Bible verse at the beginning of each chapter that is often followed by an incident in Daniel’s life. At the end of each chapter is a conclusion or relevant reflection. There are also drawings that help to better illustrate the story as well as the characters involved. In some chapters, there are also write-ups from other members of the family helping the reader see the incident from their point of view.

It is a good book to help readers understand not only people with autism but the immediate family members who care for them and who never give up despite all the struggles at hand.

Synopsis

My wife and I raised three children together, one of which was diagnosed with high functioning autism. From the beginning we committed to mainstreaming Daniel by giving him access to all the typical things in life instead of yielding to his special needs. This was not for the faint of heart, or wallet. It was a trying and expensive process, but little did we know Daniels diagnosis would open doors we'd assumed had been barred shut.

We realized that among the variety of things we faced each day with Daniel, each year one major story emerged as unique and, well, outrageous. As time moved on our passion toward mentoring and investing in others grew; it became apparent that we needed to share our lessons, failures, and most importantly, our successes.

"Specialisms: Autism Perspectives" is a collection of memories, a patchwork quilt of each wonderfully unique moment that raising a child with autism can bring.
