This collection of poetry is a delightful read. The poems are short, sweet, and punchy. The writing flows smoothly with a natural rhythm, and the rhyming strikes a perfect balance: not too simple, not overly complex. It isn’t flawless, but that’s part of its charm. The imperfections make it feel more genuine, more human, and more alive. The "behind the poetry" section at the end also adds to the human touch of the collection. These author notes give context for each poem and deepen the experience, connecting the poems to the poet in a thoughtful, personal way. It feels like getting a bonus interview from the author.
Some references may require a bit of explanation for younger readers, such as how to play cards or dominoes, making this an excellent opportunity for reading together with a parent or teacher. The "behind the poetry" section is also beneficial for providing context for the reader.
Each poem is imaginative, visual, and full of fun. The imagery is strong and vivid without getting bogged down by dense language or complicated sentence structures. The action and tone come through clearly through the word choice and descriptive writing.
One of the standout features is the artwork. The illustrations are playful and endearing, and they may just be my favorite part of the book. The style is cute and complements the energy of the poems perfectly.
There doesn’t seem to be a singular theme running through the entire book, but that adds to its appeal for me. Each poem stands on its own and allows me to read just one or two at a time. The poems cover a wide range of topics—from playing cards to cats to curly hair, so spending time to think about each one before reading the next is helpful. My personal favorite is the origin story of the phrase "Cat got your tongue"—clever, funny, memorable, and I can picture the story in my head.
