Everyone longs for a time when everything will fall into place and become as it should be; with no worries or cares just fulfillment, of hopes, dreams, and aspirations. But until that day we wait with the belief that each twist and turn of life, is somehow bringing us closer to this moment, for eventually our time will come…Someday.
That surely was the case for Constance Stamply. Never in a million years would she have thought she would be in her late thirties, single with no prospects. She tried to remain optimistic, but her trail of failed relationships challenged her view, making her question if good men still existed. That was until she met a doting stranger who was looking for something new.
Robert Chapman never fully believed he would find success in love, especially after his whirlwind relationship with his ex. Their breakup only added to his mountain of rejection, proving that nothing last forever, so you might as well prepare for the end. But just when he thought this was his lot in life, he gets a breath of fresh air from a chance encounter.

Someday soon I will meet you, and when I do, both our lives will forever be changed.
“Urgh… I don’t know why they make these things so unbelievable,” huffed Constance as she exhaled deeply and sent her natural curls dancing in the air above her forehead. Slamming the book closed, she rolled her eyes and quickly placed it back on the green wooden shelf.
Seeing a growing lanky silhouette out of the corner of her eye, Constance turned to see Trudy’s red ringlets bouncing happily down the adjacent aisle.
“What’s not believable?” asked Trudy.
“Romance novels!”
“Oh…well…all of them aren’t that bad.” Trudy smirked as she joined Constance down the Adult Fiction aisle.
“Come on, Tru, you know the majority of these novels aren’t even worth the paper they’re written on.”
Smiling shyly, Trudy pushed her black-framed glasses up the bridge of her nose while venturing down the aisle further to pick up another novel. Usually, she shared her friend’s opinion, but somehow today she felt it carried a little more bite than usual…almost cynical.
Constance and Trudy had been friends since college, so Trudy was rather familiar with her sentiments. They met their freshman year when assigned as partners in the freshman scavenger hunt during orientation. Instantly, the pair found that they were connected in a way neither had anticipated.
Now, Constance had never been one to willingly open up to others because she feared being vulnerable. For if life had taught her anything, it was that people were not always what they seemed, so it was best to keep them all at arm’s length. But every once in a while, life would throw her a bone, and she’d meet someone who was genuine and worthy of being trusted.
Trudy was one of those people.
She saw beneath Constance's perceived hard exterior, and Constance saw Trudy’s sincere heart. Although both were quick-witted, passionate people, they found there were notable divergences about them that often led to a difference of opinions at times. However, in spite of this, their bond grew stronger as the days went by. So much so that on graduation day, they made a pact to keep their tradition of meeting up once a month for their weekend adventures.
During those times, the girls would venture out to their favorite coffee house to indulge in the guilty pleasures of a double shot latte with extra foam. After hours of chatting, their caffeine highs would finally subside, just in time for them to take a stroll down the historical and heartwarming contemporary romance aisle. Both would randomly choose one of the latest novels and playfully reenact the love-swoon endings. Each performance grew in unbelievable antics, which always sent echoes of laughter bubbling into the air. Although they enjoyed mocking the unrealistic ending, they both secretly wondered when their someday would come.
Trudy’s someday came early, which created her present optimism but sadly left Constance to fend for herself unexpectedly. It was just May of last year that she and John made it official after ten years of dating on and off again since college. Habitually, after each breakup, Trudy would vow to Constance to never allow John to be a part of her life again, and yet after a few weeks of pursuing her, she would give in, and they’d start right back where they left off: crazy in love.
So, when their last breakup occurred and Trudy headed straight to Constance’s apartment for a shoulder to cry on, she prepared herself for the broken record plea. “I can’t keep living my life in parts,” she had cried.
I’ve loved this man for ten years and still, there is no fruit from our labor. We are still in the boyfriend – girlfriend, on again off again state with no prospects of a future together. This is it for me, CeCe. I’m done!” Trudy had screamed as she sobbed uncontrollably on Constance’s shoulder.
Initially, Constance sat in silence for she was all too familiar with this routine, but something in Trudy’s voice told her this time was different. John soon found this to be true when he came around to express his same ole I’m sorry, baby routine two weeks later. To his surprise, Trudy didn’t budge at his crocodile tears. She held to her declaration, refusing to allow his routine to become her reality again. After weeks of “no,” John knew she was serious, and he needed to really make a change if he wanted to be with her. Soon thereafter Trudy announced their engagement, and they were married not too many months thereafter.
Neither Constance nor Trudy really anticipated just how much their relationship would change after Trudy was married. At first, it was small, subtle changes to accommodate their now third party, but soon major changes were needed when Trudy found difficulty in splitting her time between both Constance and John effectively. Regrettably, they said goodbye to their late-night calls and the spontaneous midweek sleepovers they’d come to love. They even had to limit their weekend ventures to once a month to allow a healthy balance to form amongst them. Despite the many changes, both were still willing to keep their friendship alive and strong. Little did they know how much it would be needed in the coming months.
“Don’t worry, Constance, your someday will come!”
Trudy chimed in, bringing Constance back to their present conversation. She turned towards her with a look of disbelief as she playfully rolled her eyes at Trudy’s response.
“No, I’m serious. We both never thought we would be in our thirties and unmarried, but things changed for me when John and I renewed our commitment to one another. Now we couldn’t be happier.”
“I know, Tru, and I’m really happy for you guys, but I haven’t had any prospects in quite some time, so it’s a little harder for me to see that someday everyone keeps talking about. Maybe I just have to come to the realization that this may not be the path for me.”
“Don’t think that way!” Trudy cried as she walked briskly down the aisle looking intensely at her friend. “You are an amazing woman and you have so much to offer. You just haven’t found your someone that meets all you desire for your life. It takes time.”
“I know,” sulked Constance.
Taking her by the hand, Trudy drew her in closer. “You can’t just know; you have to believe that it will happen for you too, CeCe. You just have to remain open to the possibility.”
Giving a weak smile, Constance squeezed Trudy’s hand while secretly wishing she were right.
