Stephen G. Bowling captured perfectly how a child's imagination knows no bounds.
The solar system is full of mystery. Can one curious feathered friend build a way to explore space?
Simon loves gazing up at the night sky. As he stares at the brightly shining moon, the little bird wonders what kind of friends he might make up there… and if they have ice cream. So he comes up with the brilliant idea to construct a mighty homemade spaceship and blast off into the atmosphere.
Sharing his grand plan with his barnyard buddies, Simon is thrilled that everybody wants to join the adventure and help bring his futuristic craft to life. So they all get to drafting sketches, collecting cardboard, and hammering nails to ready their great galactic chariot for their biggest trip ever!
Can Simon and his pals zoom off the launchpad before it’s time for bed?
Simon’s Rocket to the Moon is the fabulous third book in the Simon’s Tree House Adventures children’s series. If you or your child like intrigue at bedtime, tons of fun animals, and beautiful imagery, then you’ll love Stephen G. Bowling’s lovely page-turner.

What a brilliant and beautifully constructed cover. What a clever idea to replace the letter "o" in the word "to" with an image of the moon. Vitali Dudarenka's artistry astounded me page after page. I was impressed by all their drawings and had difficulty pinpointing a favorite. After MUCH deliberation, I picked Clarence as my favorite drawn character. The page where he was holding the blueprint blew me away!Â
Aside from the illustrations, the actual story was magnificent too. Stephen G. Bowling captured perfectly how a child's imagination knows no bounds. If you have children, you know nothing is as it seems. A pot and bucket transform into a hat or a drum. The backyard could be a forest. The ground will become lava or quicksand. And let's not forget, a box is never just a box. Using their imagination, kids transport all over the world and, in the case of Simon's Rocket to the Moon, into space.Â
Simon's Rocket to the Moon encourage children to create, imagine, and follow their dreams. Even though the animals in the story never went to space except in their sleep, it's important to always reach for the stars.Â
I'm not sure what age bracket the author or publisher intended for Simon's Rocket to the Moon. I think toddlers will love the animals and other various images by Vitali Dudarenka. Due to the dialogue's simplicity, I recommend this book to beginning readers.
As an activity, maybe have a table filled with various materials and have your child or class work solo or together to create a rocket. Simon's Rocket to the Moon by Stephen G. Bowling might inspire your child to become a space engineer or an astronaut.Â
There is a page dedicated to fun facts about the moon, which can be helpful in a homeschool or public school setting (Earth science lesson).Â
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, Goodreads, and X (formerly Twitter.) Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
