"This has to look great!" She huffed, reaching forward to adjust the positioning of the sculpture. It was a sculpture of Athena, its form casting a dark shadow on the gallery's white wall. With the light from the window hitting the painting, Elizabeth's lips curled in a smile. Her eyes darted around the gallery, currently bathed in the sunlight. The golden light, revealing the details of the other artworks hanging on the wall. She walked towards the next art piece and stared at its bronze surface, secretly wondering if it truly belonged on this wall. Finally, she took it off, handing it over to Timothy. He frowned at her, his mustache rubbing against his nostrils. "You do not think that it belongs?" She shook her head and opened her mouth to explain why when a sharp sound broke through the silence. Pulling her phone from the pocket of her dress, she glanced at Timothy who now stared at the painting, dark eyebrows furrowed. "Excuse me, Timothy," she muttered, walking towards the end of the hall. He ignored her but it didn't matter. She would ask ifhe had figured out why the piece didn't belong upon her return and his intense staring had better brought up an answer. She stared at the Caller ID. It was an unknown number. She could even swear she didn't recognize the string of digits. She stared at it for a minute before sighing and
Elizabeth’s husband has never been the same since a train wreck left him paralyzed. Bitter and self-loathing, Robert resents his wife and her efforts to be his caretaker. Feeling emasculated by his dependence on Elizabeth, Robert lashes out at her verbally and refuses to be intimate with her. After becoming aroused by a woman he sees from his window, believing that being with a woman who didn’t see him as a patient could solve his problems, Robert tells Elizabeth he wants an open marriage. Reeling from this admission, Elizabeth is distraught at first, but she soon finds herself being seduced by a much younger and very wealthy famous artist. Torn between her duty to her disabled husband and her emotional and sexual needs, Elizabeth must decide how to move forward.
The synopsis of Sculpting Shadows paints a very enticing picture. As someone with a criminal psychology degree and a love for psychological fiction, I was very excited to read this novella. Unfortunately, the story only scratches the surface of its potential. While novellas are generally expected to be light on character development, given the blurb, I was expecting much more. The relationships between characters felt superficial. Numerous editing issues impacted the readability of the book. Additionally, the conclusion was rushed, ending very abruptly and without any concrete resolution.Â
The content of this book might be off-putting to some audiences as it deals with a romance between a married woman and her affair partner. Sculpting Shadows is marketed as a romance novella, but readers of the romance genre generally are not receptive to the cheating trope. If the book were revised and expanded to truly delve into the mental health and emotions of Robert and Elizabeth, this book could find readership in the literary fiction genre. It is best suited to an adult audience due to the age of the characters and explicit, open-door sexual content, but in its current state, I would not recommend this book.
