Risk with a Whisk is a whimsical tale about an African girl named Mara and her best friend, Pela, who take a culinary journey through the day. Beginning with breakfast, and traversing through incredible snacks, cool beverages, and daring main courses, Mara and Pela discover that there is a wide, wonderful world of cuisine right outside their doorstep. Part cookbook, part narrative, and part activity book, Mara's adventure is jam-packed full of surprises and fun.

I loved the narrative portions of this multilayered book. Mara is a girl so full of joie de vive , and her positive attitude inspires everyone around her. Pela is a boy who loves adventure and having a great time exploring with his best friend Mara. Together, Mara and Pela take a delightful journey through their African city, discovering all kinds of yummy treats along the way. The illustrations are gorgeous, and bring every scene to life, while the written words are so real that I felt like I was riding on the bus alongside Mara and Pela!

The cookbook sections were full of a great variety of dishes, from familiar egg sandwiches to exotic chin-chin snacks. There are also plenty of instructions for kitchen safety, so even the youngest readers can enjoy this book without fear.

The activity pages made me feel like the book had a just a bit too much going on. Going back and forth from narrative to recipe to activity and back again made it a tad difficult for me to follow as a reader. The only other detraction is that it is unclear whether Mara's adventures (and her friend Pela) are part of her physical world, or simply inhabit Mara's world of dreams.

Besides these detractions, Mara's culinary and cultural journey was a delight to experience. Both the written words and the illustrations are full of so much heart that I feel like a true part of Mara's family. It even inspired me to try a new recipe of my own with the young chef in my life!

Perfect for ages 7 and up, or for anyone who loves world culture, a good story, and a variety of new recipes, Mara's journey is an excellent choice for budding chefs. I hope that this is the beginning of many, many new culinary adventures with Mara and Pela, as they explore this big, beautiful world full of food and fun.
