“Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” —Ephesians 6:16
In the end times, what flaming arrows will you face?
When tribulation begins, Maddie Ruth Bennett faces an unexpected enemy. Fear threatens to spin her into darkness when her dad embarks on a secret mission, leaving her feeling helpless. With the help of her friends and loving mentors, she is introduced to the One, who offers a shield of faith and peace from the anxiety that grips her.
A traumatic event forces Maddie to make a decision. She must either embrace courage through the shield of faith or allow fear to take her out.
Her dad, David Bennett, is drawn out of retirement to confront a national threat. Duty over family has been a long-standing battle in the Bennett household, and David is the only one who understands that a threat to his country is a threat to his family. He must act quickly or lose everything.
Who will Maddie and David trust in the darkness?
Will they find the light that shines when the truth is revealed?

June 22
Wild Rock, Tennessee
Thunder rolled in the distance. Maddie sighed as she listened to raindrops fall on the metal roof overhead. While she knew Mother Nature could create quite the show, the calm before the storm revealed her heart. Taps became plops as a crescendo of summer rain attempted to lull her to sleep moments before the storm brought chaos to the world around her.
Her Grammy referred to these preludes as peace.
Maddie Ruth, never ferget yer Creator, she would say. He provides peace in the storm. This rain right here, why it was sent from Heaven, and God’s word says it’ll not return without waterin’ the earth, makin’ it bud and flourish, providin’ seed for the sower an’ bread for the eater. Jes’ so, his word won’t return to him empty but’ll accomplish all he desires. Nothin’ to fear child, yer Father in Heaven’ll provide everythin’ you need. This rain here’s a sign that he’ll always provide. There’s no storm he cain't control.
She loved her Grammy. Grace Bennett, an outspoken woman, embodied a passionate heart and a gentle spirit. Born in the Blue Ridge mountains, Grace was a naturalist who lived on the land. She loved her God, her family, her rocking chair, and her snap beans, in that order. Maddie could still remember the smell as she would sit for hours on Grammy’s porch snapping beans while listening to the barn-thumpin’ rain overhead, as Grammy called it.
Glancing at her scarred hands, she reminisced about the simpleness of the bean, the bumpy feel of the pod as she broke it into pieces, and the earthy taste of the bean as she snuck a bite. Another sigh escaped her lips as nostalgia turned to anxiety. She could almost feel her mom’s disgust over the ragged appearance of her hands as she wondered, when did life become so complicated?
On cue, her grandmother's voice again broke into her anxious thoughts.Â
Maddie Ruth, yer the little-blessed one and’ll be a companion to many. God in Heaven is yer strong tower. Run to him child, and you’ll be safe. Always remember this Love. Nobody can ever take this away from you, nobody.
Once again, peace filled her anxious heart.
As the firelight cast shadows over the sleeping figures of her little brother Matthew and her friend Rachel, she found herself grateful, even a little jealous of their slumber. Rest seemed to be out of reach for Maddie with so many thoughts going through her head. So much has happened; what will tomorrow bring? She pondered. The encouragement of Grammy's soft voice interrupted her musings once more.
Sleep, Child. Tomorrow’ll be here soon enough and with trouble of its own. But tonight, my sweet, ya need ta rest.
And with that, her heavy lids fell, and the dream would begin.
Oh my goodness, this book is absolutely incredible. The main characters are Maddie, who just turned 15, and her dad; with her family and her 3 friends being strong side characters. The story takes place around a national security threat, which Maddie’s dad is involved in, and what happens in Maddie’s personal life and her family. This story is extremely relevant to the state of the world we are living in now. It is relatable to what families go through when one parent is away at work and what teens go through just dealing with life. Faith also plays a major part in this story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was fully engrossed from the beginning to the end. There was never a dull part. I truly felt as if I was right there with Maddie, rooting for her through the whole book. The book is intense, powerful and mighty. It is excellent for young adults and older people. I am 50 and I loved it. It’s just so relatable. It is obvious that the author has done her research, and I appreciated that while reading. It made me enjoy the book so much more. Maddie and her friends go through so much. It’s like a roller coaster with twists and turns. There is a lot of suspense which keeps you reading. Once I started this book, I only put it down to get my son from work; it’s the truth. This is one of those books where it’s hard to write the review because so much happened that I’m afraid to say anything because I fear I would just give too much away.
I looked up this book on Amazon and there is a second one, which I am thrilled about because there is something left undone. I am going to dive into that book next. I am excited to read more of all these characters to see what happens next. This is the type of book where the characters stay with you, as if they are a part of your life. I’m not ready to let them go. I highly recommend this book, and I would give it 10 stars if I could. I am excited to have found this author, and I hope she writes many more books.
