Rally is a perky little Corgi who is game for an adventure! The day begins with anticipation. Seeing his mom and dad's luggage, Rally the corgi packs his favorite toys too. But where are they going? To his absolute joy, they are boarding a train! On the train, Rally makes friends and eats special treats. Rally's enthusiasm is tested when they go through a tunnel, and everything goes dark. But with his mom and dad by his side, they come back out into the light again and see his people—grandmommy and papa!
Told in rhyme, the story presents Rally's unique experience, although his parents are with him on the train. Even many of the illustrations are kept at corgi-eye-level, offering a fun viewpoint! The tone is bright, much like a summer day. Children may empathize with the excitement Rally has for the novelty of being on a train, but also for going to visit their own grandparents. The flow makes it easy to read aloud, making it an excellent choice for story time.
The illustrations by Leslie Dunn are sunny and engaging. Done in watercolors, they convey the excitement of the event while possessing a colorful, yet calming, charm. Of course, Rally himself is depicted as utterly adorable and is sure to excite many a corgi fan. But the showstopper is the bright red, vintage train. The illustrations are a pleasure to drink in.
Perhaps the most treasured characteristic of the book is its genuineness. Rally is a real live corgi who loves his grandmommy and papa. It is always an honor to be offered a glimpse into a beloved space of someone's life, but when it is written so winsomely and accompanied by such endearing paintings, it becomes a true treat! The entire experience is heartwarming.
Lovers of trains and dogs alike will be delighted by Rally Takes the Train. This is one book my daughter requests to reread multiple times in one sitting. She cannot get enough of its cadence, its colors, and (most of all) the adorable Rally.
