Families come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Many families are a blend of different cultural backgrounds, races, and genders. In these homes, it is common for family members to speak more than one language. In America, English is the most spoken language, followed by Spanish. This children's book is written in both languages.
Before you begin the story, I advise scanning the QR code on the final page. You'll be redirected to the author's site for a chance to receive a FREE narrated flipbook. To be fully transparent, I could not get the free book feature to work; however, you might have better luck. Since my family can speak a little bit of Spanish, we knew the basic grammar rules, how to say the alphabet correctly, and when a letter is silent (h, hola) or pronounced differently than it would in English, such as J (sounds more like an h). If Spanish is the dominant language in your home and you're trying to learn English, I would practice its alphabet since they do differ. This is great advice when taking on the task of learning any new dialect.
With a basic understanding of each dialect, your child or class will be on the fast track to understanding how to say every family member's title like uncle (tio), brother (hermano), mother (madre), and cousin (primo). I was pleased the writer included two family pets: a cat (gata) and a dog (perro).
Each family member is introduced through complete sentences. That enables readers of varying ages to converse more fluently with another person instead of pointing and reciting single words.
With beautiful illustrations and languages differentiated by careful design choices (Spanish words encased in a yellow rectangular box), this interactive storybook is perfect for beginning readers or those who want to learn a new language.
