Review

'Packed with action and thematically rich, this globe-crossing crime thriller stands out. Lovers of swift-moving crime thrillers will enjoy this book, which packs a punch while delving deep into the human psyche. Great for fans of: Lisa Lutz's The Passenger, Alex Michaelides's The Silent Patient. '

This was a really refreshing read. The main character, Toni, is escaping a life of crime and abuse, trying to restart her life on her own. I very much appreciated that she did so without falling into the arms of a man to save her. The author discards the tiresome trope of a lady in distress and gives us one who is resourceful and entirely believable. No three months learning martial arts to become a sudden master, or wiz with firearms. Instead, she survives thanks to her brains and determination. We don't need to suffer through awkward sexual tension between her and her mentor, and instead are treated to a realistic relationship that grows throughout the novel into one of mutual respect. Toni's backstory is handled brilliantly, through remembrances and dreams, building a solid character I'm eager to follow through the next installment.

Toni is trying to escabe her mobster family, she fakes her own death. She learns that her brother is on his way to Mexico and fears for her life, Will she run again or will she risk her life for a chance to be free. I really liked this book very suspensful and engaging. Which route will she take? What will happen to her if she makes the wrong chocie ? What will happen to her if she makes the right choice? You will have to read to find out :) .

Fast-paced thriller with surprises but not convoluted. Strong character development and there's a cat, which is always a bonus. Highly recommend!

I have mixed feelings about this book, honestly.

Good characters, good dialog, but… I ended up feeling like I was reading the treatment for a TV series (one I would watch!). It has a distinctly "La Femme Nikita" feel, which is not a bad thing. Interesting locations that would look good on film. Disguises! Insane asylums! Hawaiian shirts! Cats! All good and good fun.

The main issue I had was that the writing felt a bit flat. The locations are not given the kind of texture and color that makes the place come alive, so that I kept forgetting it was set in Mexico. I think it's the generic descriptions that made me see it more as a treatment than as a novel. The writing doesn't really paint the vibrant pictures the locations deserve.

I was also quite startled by the sudden plot twist at the end. It's logical, but it isn't at all where I thought the story was heading. Maybe that's a me problem not a book problem, I don't know.

Overall a pretty fun and fast read. And I would certainly check out the movie if it ever got made.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing me with a free advance review copy of this book.

In these times of travel chaos and economic pressures, you may be thinking staycation sounds better than vacation. Wherever form your summer plans take, a word of advice: pick your books carefully. I suggest you pick Karmen Spiljak’s new thriller No Such Thing as Goodbye. It will deliver the thrills you expect from excellent crime fiction. And Spiljak’s finely-honed literary craft means you feel immersed in the story’s settings – Amsterdam, Mexico City - without having to battle flight delays to get there.

Karmen Spiljak made her literary splash last year with short story collection Add Cyanide to Taste. She brings that award winning formula to No Such Things As Goodbye, where heroin Toni Morretti fakes her own death to escape the clutches of her mobster family. But before she can begin a new life, however, she is pulled into a dark world filled with spies and deadly secret.

“Among all the forms of death, murder is the one with the widest appeal” – Andrew Taylor, SHOTS Crime & Thriller EZine

Spiljak knows this and she’s assembled a cast of characters that make death by murder a daily possibility. And as Toni quickly discovers, when murder is in your blood, it’s hard to stay ahead of your past.

This was an excellent read. The odd combination of confidence and insecurity make Toni Moretti completely relatable. There is plenty of action of all sorts, yet you aren't left breathless trying to keep up. Carl and Julia are wonderful supporting characters. And of course, there is Purrito. If you like spy novels, novels with strong female characters, or mysteries, I would recommend this book to you and I will look forward to other work from this amazing author.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

No Such Thing As Goodbye by Karmen Špiljak is a well written, thoroughly entertaining thriller novel. It is quite the page turner and kept me interested from beginning to end.

Toni is a really intriguing main character. Despite her backstory, she is a warm person and I really enjoyed getting to know her.

The plot was very well researched and I enjoyed the thrilling ride. It wasn’t too fast or too slow, it was in the perfect pacing that kept me flipping the pages.

I look forward to more from this author. Don’t miss out on this great thriller!

This is one of those books that are read in one go: an interesting heroine, complex situations, much thrill and suspense and also entertaining as hell.
It does not hurt that it includes a cat ...

Good writing leads you on and doesn’t trip you up - Karmen’s writing is good; there are some sentences that held my attention in a good way but without detracting from the storytelling. Most of the time, though, I was led by the story, an interesting take on a spy thriller with a chilling sub plot running through it. Karmen’s way of revealing her character’s backstory is very natural and by the end of the book I felt I knew the character well enough to maybe go for a coffee with her. I would have read this book in one sitting if I’d been allowed to! This is a book which stretches across many genres and I would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic thriller with believable, well-written characters.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2022
Many recent crime stories (be they movies or novels) based in Mexico are awash with ultra-violence and cliched characters, so it was refreshing to read a story where you could believe in the characters and what was happening to them. There are many exciting, original predicaments and scenes here that are well-written and make it feel fresh, leaving you wanting to see more of these characters. My only minor criticism is that the main character's age felt a bit off (she feels in her thirties rather than her twenties) and I would have liked to have seen more of the brothers in the book (although perhaps they are being saved for a sequel).

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Experiencing the adventure of a believable character who navigates the murky world of organised crime and the murkier world of spies was a real treat. The action didn't let up and the twists kept coming. Hoping this will become a series.

I read this book in two days, couldn't put it down. I particularly enjoyed the well developed character of the main protagonist, the subtlety of her story and reading a thriller that didn't centre around a weary detective for once. Looking forward to the next in series.
