Randy’s sister wants a WHAT?!? And his Mom isn’t flat-out saying no?!
My Sister Wants an Elephant is the true story of two siblings who team up together to convince their mother to let them own a couple of wild animals as pets, and a mother who just might be persuaded.
Full of humor and fun, this book is a good lesson in not giving up on your dreams, no matter how truly wild they may be!

It's not uncommon for children to ask for a pet for their birthday. Many ask for a furry animal such as a kitten, puppy, hamster, guinea pig, etc. Some children might go the reptilian route: lizard, snake, or turtle. Others might want a bird or fish. I've even seen television programs where children ask about a new farm animal. Let's not forget the bravest children who ask for a creepy crawler (spider). But I have never seen or heard a child ask for an elephant in all my years. To know My Sister Wants an Elephant is based on a true story is even more astounding.
While Jerica (two-year-old sister) desperately wanted an elephant, Randy (eleven-year-old brother) dreamed of having a pet llama. It was cute how he worked with his baby sister to practice and master her pouting skills. They practiced every day for weeks, and finally, it was time to see if their dreams would become a reality.
Parents compromise A LOT with their children, and that's what their mother did in this situation. Without going into details, I'll say the mother's ingenious ideas served multiple purposes: she made the children happy and helped out the animals the children love.
My Sister Wants an Elephant by Lynne Podrat is "full of humor and fun," and "this book is a good lesson in not giving up on your dreams, no matter how truly wild they may be!" The illustrations by Sarah Gledhill are sweet, fun, and funny, especially the image of the giraffe giving the mom a wet kiss and the dream bubble featuring the mom taking a Siberian Tiger for a walk.
Children will love the story, and parents, too.
I recommend this book for children two years of age and older. I also recommend families check out the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). It's mentioned in the book, and they are one of the largest animal welfare and conservation charities in the world.
