People are teased or laughed at for numerous reasons. In Little Monkey's Big Moment, we step inside a zoo where a little monkey wants a banana, but unfortunately, he's too small to reach them. His habitat companions could've offered him one, but they all laughed at him instead. The artist did a wonderful job capturing how hurtful words and laughter can affect someone, even a little monkey. The disappointed and saddened monkey had to rely on old nuts and gross bugs for nourishment until his luck seemed to change. The other monkeys decided to hold a contest: Whoever could swing on the vines the fastest would win bananas. This was the little monkey's time to shine, to prove the haters wrong, and (of course) eat some bananas!
To win any race, one must train, and little monkey was up to the challenge. He looked mighty adorable wearing his headband and lifting the barbell with coconuts posing as the weight plates. Kids will laugh out loud at the drawing where the little monkey used an unorthodox object to swing from. Kids will also love completing the author's challenge: find all four times the squirrel is pictured in the story. The author also asks readers to draw their favorite zoo animals. Parents and teachers will love the fun and interactive activities. I loved these features, as well, but suggest removing the reader log section. Instead, replace it with another activity, or this book belongs to.
Little Monkey's Big Moment is a motivational, sweet children's book that reinforces the fact that "Even little monkeys can do big things." I loved the book's uplifting messages. It teaches kids not to let teasing break their spirit; try their best, and if they fail the first time, practice and try again. Also, never laugh or tease other people. Remember how the little monkey felt, so let's not hurt anyone's feelings. Only say kind, reassuring words!
My recommended age for comprehension is 2-7 years. While babies won't grasp the lessons, they will enjoy looking at the adorable illustrations, making this a book that can last for years.
