Lacinda was different from others in her tiny town, and no one knew what to make of her. Though she faced some challenges and curious eyes on her first day of school, there’s a wonderful learning moment for all at the end of the day about celebrating exactly who you are!

People can't resist but stare when presented with non-normative sights. It's a neurological response in which our brain processes what we see. Lacinda was born with features you wouldn't find in your typical lion. She had bright, wavy red hair, big blue eyes, and freckles all over her body. She was pretty, but her appearance raised eyebrows. Her family didn't know what to make of Lucinda's appearance; they had never seen a lion look like her before. Lucinda was met with puzzling looks at school, too.
Lucinda, like many children, went about her first day of school, oblivious to how her appearance drew confused stares from her classmates. Her focus was on the classwork. Lucinda's features might differ from those of the other students, but inside, she shared some of the same thoughts or opinions. She had a favorite food, an opinion on each school subject and lesson, and a favorite class period. As she reflected on how today went, the teacher shared one more important lesson. It's an interactive lesson that I recommend classrooms and families participate in. It involves looking at yourself, looking at others, and noticing that we are all unique. The point of the lesson is to teach kids that we should celebrate our uniqueness and never feel embarrassed by it or make others feel ashamed of theirs.
Lacinda the Lion Is a Super Unique Beast is a heartwarming tale with a powerful message we should all share with our children. The book's illustrations are truly stunning, from the soft blend of colors in the sunset over the mountains to the collage of butterflies. Each page is like a work of art, and Lacinda is a beautiful character with her orange-red hair and bright blue eyes.
I cannot stress enough how much I recommend reading Lacinda the Lion Is a Super Unique Beast and other books in the author's Super Youneek Beast series. These vibrant and fun reads are sure to become family favorites, and you'll find yourselves reaching for them again and again!
Amazon's recommended reading age is baby-12 years.
(Side note: I loved how the author wrote "Unique" in the series title. I bet kids will get excited when they catch the word-play connection.)
