"In this beautifully illustrated and soul-nourishing story, L.B. Discovering the Inner Light invites children on a magical journey of self-discovery, courage, and inner wisdom."
L.B. is not just a beetle but a being with thoughts and feelings. They grapple with questions of identity and purpose, just as we do. Each page of this beautifully illustrated story brings us and L.B. closer to the answers we all seek.
L.B. looks different than you and me, but this fictional insect feels emotions just like us and reacts to certain situations like us, too. For instance, the scared little beetle hid under a leaf when a storm rolled in. As their heart raced, their thoughts drifted to their mother and the tune she used to sing to them. The song subconsciously compelling L.B. to summon his courage and brave the stormy weather. Safe and sound, L.B. pondered a new question: "What reminded me of the song and gave me the courage?"
As a new day presents itself, L.B. faces another relatable situation: being excluded from games. Oh, how heartbreaking it can be to see a child sitting sad and alone when you know their tears would instantly disappear if only one child showed them an ounce of kindness. Hopefully, young readers will think twice before excluding anyone from games or activities after reading L.B.'s story.
L.B. didn't stay sad or alone for long, thank goodness, but questions still weighed heavily on their mind. Questions that will remain unanswered as we move onto a new scene, which involves a new emotion: frustration. Not a single reader, young or old, hasn't experienced this emotion; therefore, ask your students how they handle frustrating moments. Adults, share how you handle them as well.
As readers and L.B. soar to a new day and location, it doesn't take long for the sweet beetle to run into some bad luck, causing them to feel pain and anger. Accidents will happen, and some may be caused by another person (or a giant beetle in L.B.'s case). Should we escalate tense matters with an angry outburst or calm down and consider the best course of action instead? This question would be another excellent talking point with your family or students!
The adorable beetle faces a few more VERY relatable situations and feelings. Each time, like the ones prior, these moments open the door for adults and children to converse on how they would or have handled similar situations. Every moment, every emotion felt, culminates, leading L.B. to discover the answer to their existential questions: Who am I, and why am I here? The answer is illuminating. And the illustrations leading up to the answer and those following it are stunning, too.
L.B. Discovering the Inner Light is a lovely, heartfelt story following a sweet beetle's journey as they discover how truly remarkable they are and learn to love themselves. I recommend sharing the book with your family and classroom to help children find their inner LIGHT.
