If I were to ask you what comes to mind when you hear the name Keanu Reeves, you would probably think first of the indelible character of Neo - despite the fact that Keanu Reeves has appeared in more than one hundred films throughout his career. But how should we define him as an artist? Is he the romantic hero Alex Wyler from The Lake House? The action star Jack Traven from Speed or the relentless assassin of the John Wick series? Over the decades, audiences have seen him portray a remarkable variety of characters, each revealing different facets of personality. The actor can convincingly embody the romantic lead, the action hero or the comic character - such as Ted “Theodore” Logan in the Bill & Ted stories - as well as cult figures like Johnny Utah in Point Break. He has also portrayed characters from different historical periods and imaginative worlds: Don John in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Kai in the Japanese historical fantasy 47 Ronin, and even the alien Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Whatever the role, Keanu approaches his work with discipline and dedication, carrying out extensive research and preparation in pursuit of authentic performances.
But do we really know how versatile he is? Looking beyond his acting career, we discover a multifaceted artist whose interests extend across numerous dimensions of the art world. Keanu is known for his appreciation of literature, often quoting Shakespeare, and his admiration for writers has appeared throughout interviews over the years. He was also a founding member of the band Dogstar, playing bass guitar for many years; after a long hiatus, the group reunited and once again achieved considerable success. In collaboration with visual artist Alexandra Grant, he published the art books Ode to Happiness and Shadows. In 2024, the actor co-authored The Book of Elsewhere with British writer China Miéville, an action and speculative fiction novel set in the alternate universe of BRZRKR. His passion for speed and motorcycles led to the creation of Arch Motorcycle, the company he founded together with Gard Hollinger, where engineering and craftsmanship merge in extraordinary custom-built machines.
All these achievements inevitably raise further questions. Why does Keanu admire Shakespeare so deeply? Which writers and musicians have influenced the actor most throughout his life? Does his interest extend to the fine arts as well? The more we learn about him, the more fascinating connections begin to emerge.
In 2025, Keanu embraced a new challenge alongside Alex Winter, starring in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot on Broadway - a long-anticipated performance that added a further dimension to his artistic journey.
I would like to emphasise that, despite Keanu Reeves’ successful career, this book is not intended to be a traditional biography, nor does it aim to analyse every film in which he has appeared. This study does not include any direct interview with him. Instead, it explores how Keanu’s films and artistic activities connect to different forms of art. This idea has been central to the book from the very beginning. The following chapters examine the relationships between the actor, the artists and artworks that have inspired him, and a selection of his films. In some cases, these connections are obvious and direct; in others, they are subtler yet still meaningful and worthy of exploration. Reeves’ own reflections and interviews often help illuminate these artistic relationships.
The research behind this book was carried out over several years. During that time, I consulted numerous books, articles, and interviews, and watched a wide range of documentaries and video material before the writing process itself began. Based on the information gathered, the book is divided into five thematic sections: literature, music, the fine arts, martial arts, and cinematography - all of which are closely connected to the actor’s life and career.
Due to his reputation as a passionate reader, Section One focuses on literature. The opening chapters examine Keanu’s connection to writers such as Shakespeare, Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, Arthur Miller, and Rebecca Miller, while also exploring how certain films in his career relate to their works and ideas. The section later turns to science fiction, particularly adaptations of works by Philip K. Dick in which the actor has appeared, alongside other authors whose writings have influenced him.
Section Two explores Keanu’s life as a musician and includes discussions and interviews related to the band Dogstar, in which he played bass guitar. After many years away from the music scene, the group has recently made a strong and successful return. This section additionally introduces some of the actor’s favourite musicians mentioned in interviews, as well as the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by Sacha Gervasi, who also wrote the screenplay for Henry’s Crime, Reeves’ debut project as a producer.
The collaboration between Keanu Reeves and visual artist Alexandra Grant forms the central focus of Section Three, dedicated to the fine arts. Their joint publications, Ode to Happiness and Shadows, reveal a distinctive artistic partnership that combines text, photography, and visual interpretation. Keanu’s memorable reading of Noa Noa during a Gauguin exhibition is also discussed here. Although the actor has mentioned relatively few painters and visual artists in interviews, this section introduces those figures as well.
Martial arts naturally occupy an important place in this study, especially as The Matrix transformed martial arts choreography into a central cinematic language. Section Four explores this art form through selected interviews connected to The Matrix sequels and the John Wick series. One chapter is dedicated to Keanu’s directorial debut Man of Tai Chi, whose story centres on the Chinese martial art referenced in the title. For many of these roles, he underwent rigorous physical and martial arts training, details of which are revealed in numerous interviews. The section also examines 47 Ronin and concludes with discussions of Keanu’s favourite martial arts films.
Section Five considers Keanu’s early motivation for becoming an actor before turning to Company Films, the production company founded by Keanu Reeves and Stephen Hamel. Several projects produced under the company’s banner are discussed here as well. The section also highlights the digital revolution in filmmaking through the documentary Side by Side. Finally, attention is given to some of the actors and directors who have collaborated with him throughout recent decades.
The book concludes with a discussion of Arch Motorcycle, established by Keanu Reeves and Gard Hollinger. Inspired by Keanu’s lifelong passion for motorcycles and speed, these extraordinary machines represent a rare combination of engineering precision, craftsmanship, and artistic vision. They are not merely motorcycles, but genuine works of art.
So let us begin this journey together.
Too often, it’s only in death that creative artists are recognized for the breadth of their accomplishments and fully given their due. While articles may surface here and there during an individual’s lifetime, it’s rare to see a full-length book examine not only a main body of work but adjacent interests with equal fervor. Hungarian-based film journalist Yvette Kulik does exactly that in Keanu Reeves’ ART & SPEED. Her first book is a methodically-researched exploration of the primary works and key figures that influenced his craft across the spheres of literature, music, fine art, martial arts, cinematography, and biker culture as cofounder of the Arch Motorcycle Company
In the Preface, Kulik acknowledges the book is not “a traditional biography, nor does it...analyse every film in which he has appeared...Instead, it explores how Keanu’s films and artistic activities connect to different forms of art.” Deliberate in her decision not to include a direct interview with the actor, she instead draws upon pre-existing materials including “numerous books, articles, and interviews, and...documentaries and video material.” The result is a portrait of Reeves that begins with his acting career but diversifies as fame, influence, and financial freedom enabled him to expand beyond the confines of Hollywood and evolve into an artistic Renaissance man.
Most readers will come to the book as fans of the actor, and the author satisfyingly provides a range of insights into the origin stories of the iconic characters he’s played on film. What stands out in the narrative is Reeves’s steady appreciation for every role he’s played, valuing the small parts in independent films just as much as the breakout opportunities as the lead in blockbuster franchises such as The Matrix and John Wick. Commenting on his role in the 1988 bromance Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Reeves said playing dimwitted Ted “changed my life. I tapped into something in myself I hadn’t really seen. There’s a lot of joy in that guy.” And in discussing The Matrix’s Neo, the character which brought him global superstardom, he says, “the ambition of the project was really exciting to be a part of, and then, to actually be on the set and realizing the vision of the directors was one of the special moments of my life.”
From his punk/grunge band Dogstar to his imprint X Artists’ Books -- a collaboration with artist Alexandra Grant that characterizes its publications as “works of art; portals to imagined worlds; treasured companions; the fabric of a community” -- he’s demonstrated to the world that he’s much more than an attractive leading man. While Kulik takes a journalistic approach to the narrative, there’s a touch of breathless ardor in a handful of paragraphs that lean into fan-girl adoration -- and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s resulted in a book that many cinephiles will treasure for its recognition of the value of Reeves’s ever-expanding oeuvre.
