Caro Henry’s Immigrant Dreams is a deeply moving poetry collection based around the stories of those who have had to leave their homes to find something bigger, better or just safer. With careful language choices and wonderful imagery, Henry has focused on the joys and sorrows of the experience - people who have traveled huge distances, mental and physical, to find a new definition of ‘home’.
Immigration is never a simple issue - no one chooses it unless they have absolutely no other choice - and this collection captures that feeling, showing some of the many reasons someone might be forced to leave their home. Political persecution, famine and climate catastrophe are just some of the reasons here, though the focus is generally more on the experiences in the new country rather than the old. There’s a mix of styles on offer, too; some of the poems rhyme, some don’t, some are sparse, some are rich and detailed. The constantly changing styles keep things fresh and interesting.
I have been fortunate enough not to have to immigrate, but as an Irish person, I have a connection with the phenomenon; our folk culture is built on immigration, whether during the Famine or later, and the well known saying tells us there are more Irish outside Ireland than in. These poems settled in a very particular way for me, though of course every reader will find their own connections to them.
One of my favourite aspects of the collection is how it humanises issues that can feel abstract or far away. We all see immigrants and hear about boats and maybe we say ‘that’s sad’, but we don’t really feel anything. This collection makes those people and situations real in a way we can absolutely feel and experience in a way that’s true to life.
I’ve found I have a love-hate relationship with poetry; a lot of it is very abstract and hard to follow (for me!) but this collection is easy to understand and feel. The changing lengths and styles really kept me interested - I know I said that but it’s still true! Although the poems are easy to understand, there are layers that you can come back and linger over.
