- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2021I liked his honest description of the day to day struggles when one is facing a serious illness. and the courage it takes to overcome a new and unwanted situation. It amazes me that one man can face each day with such a positive outlook and , today lead a very successful and "normal" life. I wish him well.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2021The author writes about life's ups and downs in short stories of how all of life's experiences are learning tools to look back on, to grow, to understand, to find strength and will, to overcome the toughest obstacles one may face. It's a memoir to fight for life and light in the darkness we all face at times.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2021Good job by the author about his struggles in life. I appreciate hearing his perspective as a nurse but much more as a human being! He left some things up in the air- not sure where he lands on religion and perhaps he wanted it that way…. Good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021Wow! Is all I can say. The inspirational path it takes you through is amazing. I love how Drew grasps you with these great childhood memories intermixed with his struggles. I was never familiar with throat cancer, very informative. Great read, couldn't book the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Memoir: The story of a man who loses his voice and finds himself!
If you love memoir and autobiography, Drew Ross's How to Survive a Throat Punch is a must read. I just finished it and I'm still reeling from the emotional rollercoaster!
HTSATP moves at a leisurely pace at first, floating through snatches of memories like half-remember dreams, rich with nostalgia. Rather than telling his tale chronologically, Ross follows threads of meaning. These moments of significance in his life begin to solidify into concrete themes as we move through the book, and in the end it is clear how Ross became the man he did and how he has been able to survive so many challenges.
I have not been personally touched by cancer and I am not a religious person, yet I found much to identify with in this tale of a preacher who loses his voice and finds himself. The themes of friendship, family, and faith are so strong and you can really feel Ross's passion for the people in his life. I admire the way he treats every person in his story with respect, even those who he has fallen out with or moved on from. There is a deep compassion throughout this work that felt very genuine to me.
All in all, a phenomenal memoir and perhaps the best non-fiction book I've read this year. I highly recommend this book!
