Kids will be drawn to Hold Yer Horses, Pardner! because the humorous cover is eye-catching and hard to overlook. Your kids will laugh at the drawings of the two cowboys carrying their horses.
Jake and Jed, the Jones brothers, are cowboys who work on a ranch. While the story stated both brothers liked to help others, I noticed that Jake worked hard while Jed kicked back and slept the day away. Jed's laziness had repercussions. For one, their lunch was snagged while he was napping on a bench.
After the chores' illustrative montage, Carol Choi drew one of the funniest and cutest children's book images: Molly (calf) in an oversized hat with flowers and feathers. Like with the cover, kids will be bursting with boisterous laughter at the funny picture. The mystery of who dressed up Molly in Miss Lucy's hat had Jed wide awake. Together, the brothers questioned Tiptoe Tom, who had the perfect western outlaw name.
Tiptoe Tom seems the likeliest suspect in every mystery, but is he? Who stole their sandwiches? Who pulled a prank on the calf? The answer to one of these questions made me say, "Aw."
Hold Yer Horses, Pardner! by Cody Spencer is perfect for little cowboys and cowgirls. It has two mysteries and a whole load of cuteness.
Amazon's recommended reading age is 3-7. This age group will enjoy the under-40-page western children's book. The story's resolution teaches young children not to jump to conclusions or accuse others without evidence. Great life lessons!
Even though Hold Yer Horses, Pardner! isn't marketed toward toddlers, they will love looking at the vibrant images. Parents can use the ranch drawings to teach or reinforce animals' names and sounds.
Three cheers go out to Cody Spencer. If it weren't for their bio, I would've never suspected Hold Yer Horses, Pardner! was written by a 13-year-old. I can't wait to read your next creation!
