Bygone Rebel
Remember the bygone years,
set so long now in the past,
where nightclubs were my church.
I worshipped endlessly
through the nights.
Sweltering summer sex
amid beautiful shapely girls,
perfumed bottles and ice
for souls who dared to imbibe.
Drink– and drug-fuelled laughter,
secrets I wish I could deny,
soiled carpets, beer and ash,
battered knuckles, bruised and dry.
My motorbike, agile and fast,
incessantly roaring in a race
with thunderclouds, enchanting
Heaven and Hell to collide.
Oh, the thrill of bygone years,
set so long now in the past
Mem Ferda’s poetry collection Happy Agony has an air of Ernest Hemingway about them, with their glimpse into a glamourous and star studded world, parties and night clubs, American youth, politics, world events and emotions.
The collection is divided into 5 sections, providing themes : youth, the fallacy of luxury, society, love and finally grief.
Some of the poems make use of traditional rhyming structures,
“Now you return, mind mended, claiming peace.
Fifteen summers cannot erase the strife.
The roots of hurt bind us, yet they may cease.
Your words once cut deep, like a knife.” (Simplest truth)
others break with this to make more use of imagery and emotive language. “Wrap me tight in silver foil,
quivering like a marathon runner,
on this concrete bed as deep pain
seeps into every bone, a paramedic
succouring my desperate need.” (wrap me in silver foil)
The contrast of the stories within the poems is stark, covering world events from the London Bombings and COVID, to autobiographical snippets from his past - dating girls and partying. The poems are all very personal but very readable.
In the section titled Grief, the most touching is the short story about Aydin, his sister who died tragically in her 20s. “Why Aydın?
The unfairness of it all burdened my heart, plaguing
my mind,
like an anchor
dragging me deeper into the murky depths of despair.”
He then goes on to cover the death of his mother and then his father.
I really like this collection of poems in Happy Agony and while I have to admit that I’d not heard of Mem Ferda prior to reading about him (though I’m sure I’ve seen his on screen) his transition from acting to poet is definitely a success. Happy agony is a great collection of genuinely interesting and readable poems.
