The fire, the blaze, the rage, it still enflames
Here I wage and battle, bedazzle you, my skill no glitch
When my sword bears down with grit, just know that my form is rich
Now watch the switch, gawks as she enters, the golden loc’d badass bitch
City of Wage
“I just need one bullet” was the hushed desperate cry reverberating through
Anja’s head while her mind replayed Maman Bello’s lasts words before being con- sumed in a fiery blaze. Fists clenched so hard, her knuckles turned white. Standing with her back rigid in the shadows, her demeanor exuded confidence and a quiet elegance. She patiently gazed at the arena. Despite the rowdy audi- ence’s screams, she didn’t lose focus.
A crackling loudspeaker boomed out, “Anja the bullet!”
Ignoring the hisses and boos, the ebony warrior calmly stepped forward into the arena. Medium-sized, gold dreadlocks flowed down from her head to the small of her back. She had a massive broadsword tucked into a black and gold sheath strapped on her back with metal rings encircling each shoulder.
Her gold armor hugged the contours of her tiny waist and angled out into an hourglass shape, cutting off at the mid-thigh and her shoulder blades. It glinted majestically under the bright sun.
Black netting covered her arms and legs where the armor stopped short. The mesh flowed into her obsidian-colored boots. Her neck and clavicle were exposed however, revealing a golden chain with a pendant: a shiny black bullet.
Her dark brown eyes showed no fear as she smoothly pulled her gold broad- sword out of the sheath before plunging its tip into the black soil. She placed both palms upon the handle.
Suppressing the flood of memories and emotions that threatened to overwhelm her, she whispered to herself, “I am the hope my grandmother looked for.”
The story revolves around four warriors who appear to be disconnected at the beginning of the story, but are connected in hardships, mysteries, super powers, secrets, their lives being in danger, and the fact that they are goddesses of war.
The story had re-defining potential that, unfortunately, it did not live up to or accomplish.
There were far too many characters in the story to properly represent each one. The story felt a bit all over the place as we kept moving from one character to the next rapidly, never getting to fully understand any of them. The secrets that were kept from them were revealed in an anti – climactic manner, feeling more like too much information being suddenly dumped onto the reader after a lot of mystery and confusion.
At the end, we do not know enough about any of the characters to find them relatable or to decide whether or not they are likable. As a matter of fact, we do not know enough about the story by the end, as it ends without much of clarification being made, perhaps paving the way for a series.
The story could have explored some characters and their motives or backgrounds or relations to one another more thoroughly and ended satisfactory if not too much was going on at once.
The whole plot felt like a mere set up or an attempt at world building, which is an essential part to any story, but here it took over and became the whole story.
However, the story is well - written and fast paced, and the world the author builds is quite entertaining.
We are introduced to very active characters and strong female representation. The women in the story are not afraid to go after what they want, even when they are not entirely sure what that is.
The story proves to be a fun read, I recommend it to anyone who likes swords and magic!
