I wasnât sure what to expect when I chose to review this book as itâs been a very long time since I read a joke book. Back then as a small child it was terrible puns and crass humour, one liners and predictable punchlines.
Gift of smile is a very different style of joke book. I didnât come across anything offensive or too rude, though it does use the tradition of playing on stereotypes of gender. Many of the jokes had a moral meaning to them as a way of learning too.
Grouped into different topics such as friends, teachers and students, wife, husband and family, and general jokes - the book aims to provide something for everyone.
I found that the jokes are best read aloud as the author explains at the start he has used âSmart grammarâ which seeks to copy how language is really used when spoken - I did find this initially challenging to just read as it doesn't follow standard English grammar, so wasnât how Iâm used to reading text. For example -âHusband makes the decision, âWhoever got ring yesterday is the most beloved.â
However, this does mean that for readers who donât have English as their first language, the book is a good way to learn how the language is really used when spoken. Such as learning hidden meanings, colloquialisms and puns used.
Some of the jokes also have hints after them, which refer to a list at the back of the book, which add to the readers ability to learn the hidden meanings.
Given how the language is used and the style of the jokes it includes (funny super short stories with morals), the book is probably best suited to readers for whom English is a second language, as a different way to expand their use of words and turns of phrase.
