From best-selling author Jimmy Vee comes a story about imagination, ingenuity, and the magic of making your own fun—because sometimes Plan B is better.
Every night, Hugo sleeps in his very own bed in his very own room. But tonight? Hugo has a bigger idea. He wants to sleep in his very own fort—in the room with the very big TV—and have a night filled with action, adventure, fun, and frights!
Armed with his Jumbo Book of Fort Building, a pile of pillows, and his fuzzy friend Joe, Hugo sets out to build the ultimate blanket fort. He stacks, balances, and engineers with big dreams and even bigger determination. But when his creations keep collapsing, Hugo learns that sometimes the best plans aren’t the biggest—they’re the simplest.

Multi-award-winning author Jimmy Vee is back, delivering a colorful, adventurous story that highlights what fun can be had when things don't go according to plan.
Every night, Hugo falls to sleep in his bedroom, but tonight he wants to sleep in the room with the big TV. He wants to turn another boring night into something extraordinary, a night filled with action, adventure, fun, and frights. This stupendous, memorable night kicks off with Hugo grabbing Jumbo Book of Fort Building and several armfuls of fort materials, plus his best friend Joe.
Joe, Hugo’s best friend, was an adorable and helpful stuffed elephant. The artist's use of wavy lines added texture to the 2-D character, but their skill didn't stop there. They brought every scene to life—every crash, boom, and ka-thud. The author was no slouch in storytelling either! We watch in amazement as Hugo takes various items of different sizes and textures with the intention of building a sturdy fort that also allows him to watch TV. We will see attempts fail but also watch as the boy strategizes how to improve the design and then carries out a new plan.
Did Hugo ever build the perfect fort that serves his initial purpose: a night of action, adventure, fun, and frights? Did he care to watch TV as the night progressed and sleep time inched closer? Read the book to find out! What I will divulge is that Hugo realized it's okay when things don't go exactly as planned. In fact, the change can be even more enjoyable than the original idea. Fort Night teaches kids the beauty of adapting, problem-solving, and patience when it comes to formulating or initiating a plan. If Plan A doesn't work, then go to Plan B. You might realize, like Hugo, that sometimes Plan B is better.
I recommend sharing Fort Night with kids 3 through 9 years. It's fun, full of exciting illustrations, and teaches kids to problem-solve. It also shows kids that entertainment doesn't always have to be found staring at a screen. Let's all put down the electronics and read this book, preferably inside a fort!
