It is a wonderfully written adventure story and educational with footnotes and illustrations on some basic first aid skills such as calling for help on the phone, bleeding, burns, nosebleeds and more, so children can help their friends and family. Even parents may learn a skill or two by reading the book to their children and practicing the skills with them.

Finlay the First Aid Bear: The Dare to Golden MountainĀ is a fantastic resource book that educates readers on applying first-aid in multiple situations and how to call for help in three countries: Australia, the US, and the UK.Ā Ā
Finlay learned many safety lessons/tips during his time with the Wilderness Warriors. (It's like the Boy or Girl Scouts in America.) Finlay's skills come into play within the first couple of pages of the story when he helps stop his friend's nosebleed. As Finlay tended to Frederick (the friend), the writer weaved in the steps Finlay took using simple instructions. As the story progressed, the instructions became more detailed and more prominent. Besides first-aid instructions, Finlay and his sister, Evee, would give helpful tips, such as remembering to scrub between your fingers when washing your hands.
Finlay and his Evee will walk readers through the steps to treat cuts, scrapes, blisters, and burns while demonstrating how to use two sticks to start a fire. They also inform readers what to do if they get lost: call the emergency number, say who you need to talk to, wait to be connected, and stay on the phone. But what do you do if you don't have access to a phone? The bear siblings find themselves in the exact predicament. They went into the Windy Falls Woods in Golden Mountain without parental permission. Even worse, they didn't leave a note for their parents. Lost and scared, they hunkered down in a teepee, waiting for daylight.Ā
Finlay and Evee didn't make a good choice when they left home without consent; however, they did remember to pack supplies. While the supplies and first-aid knowledge helped them in more than one sticky situation, it didn't ease their fears of being alone in the dark, surrounded by strange sounds. Their adventure taught children how to tend to injuries, gave helpful tips, but (most importantly) taught readers the importance of never leaving home without consent.Ā
For the most part, all safety tips were legible; however, the smaller signs were hard to see. I tried enlarging the text, but it only made them appear fuzzier. With that said, I still recommend reading the story, reviewing, and practicing the safety tips.Ā
Amazon's recommended reading age is 5-9 years. I suggest sharing the story with children as young as 3. Teach them how to call for help. Remind your child or class of the importance of not wandering off. And help them understand basic first-aid methods. Be sure to watch out for a sequel becauseĀ Finlay the First Aid Bear: The Dare to Golden MountainĀ ends on a cliffhanger.Ā

I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
