Come along and cheer for Silas, the loveable vampire with flat teeth! He goes on hilarious escapades through forests, across lakes and over towering mountains, as he searches for the elusive Tooth Fairy to fix his flat teeth.
“Fangs, Fairies & Follies” uses playful rhymes and captivating illustrations to spark imagination. It’s a story of perseverance and a healthy smile, celebrating the magic that occurs when unyielding determination meets with a sprinkle of fairy dust.
My initial thought of Silas was that he looked familiar. As I stared at the vampire in different scenes, it suddenly dawned on me who he looked like (in the face): Bela Lugosi, Dracula (1931). Of course, young readers might see a resemblance to Dracula in Hotel Transylvania. Children and parents will love the vampire no matter where Jaybie D. got their inspiration. He had the trademark cape, suit, and slick black hair. Silas did have large teeth, but their upper canines were flat like the rest of his chompers. This caused him great distress. What's a vamp to do with flat teeth? Silas wanted to avoid finding out.
Silas was on a mission to fix his toothy dilemma. He sought out an old bat, and no, that's not slang for an older woman. He visited a legitimate old bat, who was a dentist and wore glasses. The dentist advised him that only the tooth fairy could fix his toothy woes. Silas leaped through the glen and encountered a witch who resembled ones from cartoons/books of the past: green skin, toothless smile, and pointy nose.
Silas traveled a great distance to locate the tooth fairy. His facial expression while standing in front of the lake gave the impression he was ready for the adventure to be over. He wasn't walking another step. This made me wonder why didn't Silas turn into a bat and fly the entire time, especially over the mountain. Children might ask the same question.
Silas did meet the tooth fairy, who was adorable in her tiny crown and outfit—loved her multi-colored wings, too! His wish did come true; in other words, his canines are now sharp fangs. Silas ended the story as a happy vampire. The humans, on the other hand, might not be so pleased with the tooth fairy's work.Â
Fangs, Fairies & Follies put a hilarious spin on a character that usually sparks an adverse reaction. Families will love the plot and the retro character design. I recommend this picture book for children three years and up.Â
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
