About the author

Esme Zur, And The I Of The Age is the first book in the series, published for L.A. Estabrook. Her passion for writing started at a very young age. Writing poetry and short stories in middle school. The writing continued in college with children's books. Estabrook would say writing is in her blood with her father, grandfather and great grandfather all writing in some form or fashion.
Sitting at the dinner table one day trying to deal with all the chaos around her, Estabrook took a deep breath. Instead of yelling at the unraveling of her child she took out her phone and began typing away. Four years later Esme Zur emerged. Part of the story merges both her girls personality, herself and the mother all in one. Esme is the story of a girl’s coming of age, centered around a strong female role model, celebrated for doing something historically male. This book is written to inspire other young children to embrace who they are, what they are good at and what they love to do. Estabrook would say, “Don’t retreat away from the talent you are given, even if no one else like you is doing it.”
L.A. Estabrook was born in New Jersey and received a degree in Architecture from Cornell University. She is an author, wife, mother and Breast Cancer thriver. She longs to write more and spend as much time as she can with her family.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2021I love how the book has a strong female role model. My daughter who’s 11 love the story and it’s a relatively easy read with deep message. I think it’s a great reminder to pursue things by staying authentic to one self and not trying to fit the society mold. Great read and would recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2020And after reading it, I will buy copies to donate to kid libraries that are sorely in need of new books. I liked it because it was not full of violence like a lot of young adult books. It was an interesting storyline with just a hint of romance in it. If you enjoyed Huger Games get this book for yourself or your kiddo.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020I loved the concept introduced in this story. Encouraging our girls to explore STEM continues to grow as a trend in storytelling and needs to continue! The characters were believable and well developed for their roles. My only issue with the story was that at times the description of Esme's decoding skill at work bordered on stream of consciousness that could get a little hard to follow, (that could be my language brain fighting my math brain for interpretation haha) but that's the point of her genius and what makes her a special character. I've also personally never been a fan of cliffhanger endings even in series. But a solid read otherwise!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020Estabrook’s novel creates a dystopian world with a fierce protagonist and compelling powers to overcome. I am immersed in the story and can’t wait to read the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020I felt like I was IN the story due to Estabrook’s thoughtful descriptions of people and places. In a time when we all are experiencing a changing world and hardships, a character that overcomes is just what we need to read. This is a fantastic gift this season for any ‘tween or teen looking for a little encouragement and hope.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021Esme Zur has all the best components of a young, pre-teen novel - character development at a level that youth can connect with, conflict between siblings, coming of age questions, and self-discovery. Estabrook cleverly writes in a way that leaves plenty of room for imagination - which is necessary for any futuristic novel where humans are living in a new, unfamiliar world to the reader. Hints of dangerous outside elements, decoding & problem solving, and unknowns about what happened to a missing character are woven throughout - and keeps the pages turning!
As a parent, I found that the novel was best suited for advanced elementary readers and middle-school kids. This would be a safe entry into dystopian novels, or a great read-aloud for younger audiences who are curious but need some guidance. Note: the storyline jumps around in the first few chapters and requires some advanced thinking & piecing together. But it sets the stage for what happens next, and the excitement really picks up towards the second half of the book, so get ready! Absolutely loved reading this novel, and can't wait for the next.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2021This is a great coming-of-age YA book that brings together the power of family, friendship, and some serious girl-power coding skills. Set in a dystopian future beset by climate change and where AI has taken over, Esme Zur has just found out that she has been put into a special government-run school to hone her coding skills. She is more than up to the challenge, but her family is reeling after her father was taken away by the Andize guards and she still doesn't really understand why. Esme needs to trust her skills and creativity, tap into the clues her father left behind, and band together with her new friends at school in order to hack the AI and find out the truth about where her father was taken. I particularly liked the descriptions of the physical manifestations of the AI code, as well as the relationship between the two sisters and Esme's close bond with her grandmother. This is an exciting and action-filled story and I can't wait to continue the trilogy. (less)
