Absolutely delightful young adult tale about embracing your individuality and taking chances

Synopsis

What would YOU do if…
Everyone around you disappeared and suddenly you were in a circus?
A beam of moonlight tattooed your arm with a circus act you are meant to master?
You and four strangers were brought together to defeat The Shadows?

Jaiden, Stella, Adam, Eli, and Laura had no idea either. One minute Jaiden was worried about a date, Stella was babysitting, Eli was running away from Adam, Laura was sneaking out – and the next, they were meeting R.L., the ringleader of Cirque.

With the guidance of R.L. and their trainers, they become a human cannonball, acrobats, an equestrian, a clown, and most importantly – Shadow Chasers.

Cirque and the Shadow Chasers was simply magical! It’s very rare for me to become so totally captivated by a young adult tale that speaks to my head and my heart.

The author has woven a fantastic tale that manages to focus on so many issues plaguing youth. From issues of family, love, sacrifice, bullying and abandonment- this story has something for everyone.

I absolutely adored the prose and how the author was able to articulate such complex emotions with elegant simplicity.

Cirque and the Shadow Chasers perfectly encapsulates the struggles of both parents and kids which I highly appreciated. All too often books focus on one pov instead of taking into account how hard it is for both ends. There is a level of maturity in the novel that can speak to both parent and child.

Being a parent is just as hard as being a kid.Parents are just kids with a few more years on them.”

There are such powerful lessons to be learnt from this book- not judging your parents without having fully experienced their story, having faith in yourself and the power of forgiveness and second chances. The most profound lesson is definitely accepting that bad exists in the world whether we choose to accept it or not. As a child it’s so important to understand that we cannot run from the bad or our mistakes but instead should embrace it and learn how to weather the storm.

I absolutely recommend this book to everyone who has kids who are experiencing complex emotions as it can very well speak to them. The stories and lessons are appropriate for anyone and will remain with you well after you’ve read it.

Thank you to the author and Reedsy Discovery for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

R.L.

"Knock, knock.” The ringleader looked up as his assistant, and best friend, Barnaby, entered the office. Barnaby stood in front of the old wooden desk and glanced out of the massive round window behind it.

“Who’s there?” R.L. asked with a raised eyebrow. He closed the thick leather-bound book he had been thumbing through and stood up from his chair.

“Destiny, apparently,” Barnaby replied with a smile. He tossed his gold pocket watch slightly in the air and caught it, repeating this motion several times—it was a habit of his.

“As usual,” R.L mused.

Barnaby watched as his friend put on his dark purple peacoat and dusted off one of his top hats he hadn’t worn in a while. The navy blue material was slightly tattered but its tiny silver stars still twinkled marvelously.

R.L. whistled a cheerful tune while glancing around his office for a particular journal. He grunted in approval once his eyes landed on the worn red leather nestled on a bookshelf. After flipping through pages and pages of scribbled names, he finally stopped on one. His finger glided over the ink and he smiled. It was almost time.

Together, R.L. and Barnaby walked through the hallways of Cirque Des Élus towards their destination. They greeted their performers as they passed them—jugglers, clowns, the snake family.

“This next bunch,” Barnaby spoke as they walked down a hallway lined with shelves that were filled with knick-knacks. “Are you sure they’re the ones to help?” He had to admit. He had slight doubts that such a job could be trusted with the group they were about to bring in.

R.L answered with a wink and a lopsided grin, “It’s always the most fun when it’s the most surprising.”

About the author

I knew I wanted to be an author after reading The Outsiders. The call to write something that would impact my generation was so loud, I couldn’t hear anything else. I knew there was a story about broken people finding hope that had to be told. Find out more on ourcirque.com view profile
