Buster Crayon’s 3 Very Short Bedtime Stories by Douglas Hay is a short, very-well illustrated book of three stories parents can read to their children before bed. The first story asks the child if they are a series of fun rhymes before asking if they are in bed yet. The second story is akin to counting sheep, as each page adds another object to the illustration and another number to the tally. The final story is a poem telling kids to go to sleep so that they can wake up in the morning and have a fun day.
I would rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. Each page is created with a colorful abstract design that is sure to keep the attention of sleepy kids. Additionally, the stories are full of fun rhymes and other silly statements that are sure to keep kids laughing. However, at some points the illustrations became a bit disturbing and I worry that they would scare smaller or more sensitive children, especially during the first story. The last few pages are also terrifying. The light hearted poetry turns into all caps screaming at the child to go to sleep, and it ends with a bunch of red scribbles that at first glance appear to be a murder scene.
I would recommend the first three parts of this book to parents looking for cute bedtime stories for their young children, but I would strongly recommend that no parent read the last five pages to their child. The seemingly angry tone and the apparent violence on the last page would likely be terrifying for children and end up keeping them awake instead of sending them to sleep, or at the very least give them nightmares. Reading this book to your child would be a personal choice, but I would recommend that the last part be censored regardless.
