From his favorite stuffed dino, down to his grinning dino slippers, Milo LOVES dinosaurs! After a nighttime read aloud of Best Dino Ever, Milo asks his father, “If I were a dino, what kind would I be?”
Dad provides the standard grownup answer. The kind the spurs young imaginations to defy the odds at all costs! “Milo, not to steal all your joy, but you can’t be a dinosaur, you’re just a boy.”
His teeth are not sharp, and he has toes instead of claws. But maybe with a little creativity and practice that could all change. And so, it begins…
This book encapsulates childhood ingenuity and determination. Milo is an enthusiastic little boy bursting with BIG energy and an active mind that craves stimulation. Luckily, his family supports his thirst for knowledge and encourages his sometimes wild creative streak.
The story opens on a sweet and cozy scene familiar to parents everywhere, a bedroom floor covered in toys after a successful bout of imaginary play.
It’s clear the main character, Milo, has a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) mindset. A homemade train track runs across the floor, dinosaur books are peppered throughout the room, and an easel bearing a T-Rex illustration roars in the background.
Father and son are front and center sitting together at the end of the day reading a book about, you guessed it--dinosaurs. It’s clear the pair were excited to read the book. Both are wide eyed and smiling, Dad’s lounged on the chair, one slipper on, the other lying forgotten on the carpet.
During the read aloud, we learn that Milo yearns to be the best dinosaur ever. He awakens the next morning as a young man on a mission. A mission many young dinosaur lovers share.
Milo begins by roaring at his sister, Lulu, nearly scaring her to death, then takes a moment to document the incident by painting a green T-Rex scaring a little girl that resembles Lulu.
After that, he charges to the kitchen where he eats breakfast in true carnivore fashion. A little self-reflection helps Milo realize that to become the best dinosaur ever he needs sharp claws and mighty big jaws. Putting his art skills to use, he gets busy crafting a dinosaur costume that helps him become Milo-a-saurus.
I appreciated Duck’s attention to detail in the illustrations. We really get to know Milo and feel his enthusiasm for dinosaurs from the intentional items scattered throughout the book. The pictures are colorful, eye-catching, and fun!
