Dating apps form one of the major escape routes from the trap of loneliness. However, those yearning for deep, sincere, intimate connections find them elusive and inadequate. Finding a soulmate is painstaking; one must endure many disappointments before encountering a profile worth exploring further.
Beautiful Men: The Chef by Kay Jay is an innocent, almost sublime story of our times set in San Francisco, where two such longing alienated souls set out on a journey to discover each other: a Michelin-starred restaurant chef (the hero) and an engineer-turned-product-manager (the heroine) for whom kitchen and cooking form a second vocation.
What makes this story stand out is its sublimeness. The heroine has a divine connection, though the divinity is unnamed. There’s hardly a profane, bad, or ugly word in it. It was this sublimeness that brought Kahlil Gibran’s 1912 story “The Broken Wings” to mind for me. While there’s certainly a gap between the two, there is a profound resemblance in the innocence both portray. This contrast becomes especially striking in an age that favors instant gratification. Today, partners are often eager to rush into relationships rather than tread the slower path of wisdom, which alone yields lasting rewards. e.g., the all-too-common stories of jumping into bed after the first date, repenting later, and finally breaking off in a huff, with little gained by either partner!
Honest and hard-working people drawn from the modern culinary industry, along with their peers, form the background of this story. The author is a woman, and coming from a woman author, it’s a tribute to the responsive and gentle-at-heart men of today who are understanding, accommodating, and reciprocal of the women in their lives. It was heart-warming indeed to note that she doesn’t see all men as machos, abusive, arrogant, domineering, etc. — a perception that sadly colors most men in women's eyes, but unfair to the good few who are often gems at heart and adorable companions in the man-woman story.
The book has an expressive cover that succeeds in conveying what it contains. Its narratives are well-written and clear. The readability is excellent. Although it comes close to perfection, it isn’t entirely free of a few minor English errors.
Taking the foregoing strengths and weaknesses into account, I assign it a rating of 4 stars. (I would have preferred to give it 4.5, but since Reedsy doesn’t allow ratings with decimal points, I will be content with just 4!).
This book, which explores the ever-beautiful theme of human love and relationships, receives a recommendation for all readers worldwide. Being sublime, I wouldn’t really put an age bar on it except for kids 10 years and below, who may be too unprepared to delve into adult themes. It's also not recommended for those who seek instant gratification in relationships.
