Lions and tigers and ponies, oh my! Dorothy Gale may not have mentioned all these animals when she and her three companions wandered through Ozâs Haunted Forest en route to the Emerald City. But three friends are excited about all of the above and more during a trip to the local zoo in Dikla Berkowitzâs charming childrenâs book.
Noa is excited about spending the day at the zoo with her little sister Nili and their neighbor Yair. The three friends start with a visit to a giraffe. They move on to other animals including elephants and hippopotamuses. Along the way the trio learns about animal habitats, diets, family or social groups, and how animals move or swim and get along with other animals.
Observing the animals gives the kids some ideas and inspiration. For example, when the kids notice a turtle hitching a ride aboard a hippoâs back, they wonder if the zoo has a riding area for them. Turns out, pony rides are indeed available at this zoo. (I was a little confused by the illustrations accompanying the pony ârides.â The children arenât actually riding the ponies. They are walking on the ground next to the equines.)
Well-written and briskly paced, An Adventure at the Zoo introduces young children to some of the sights, sounds, exhibits, animals, and possibilities available during a trip to the zoo. The story moves nimbly from one animal exhibit to the next as the kids take turns asking questions and learning about different animals.
The illustrations in this book are first-rate. Bright, colorful, and vibrant with a touch of whimsy, they are sure to engage young readers and keep them turning pages. I especially loved the illustrations of the smiling giraffe with an ice cream cone, the family of elephants, and the hippo with a turtle perched on its back. Priceless!
Read with a knowledgeable adult or older sibling, this book could be used as a springboard for further discussions about animals and zoos. Warm, engaging, and entertaining, An Adventure at the Zoo is a great introduction to animal habitats and the natural world. You donât even need to don ruby slippers. Or follow a Yellow Brick Road. Just grab a copy and dive in!
