Synopsis
Divot, a golf-loving character who appreciates meeting new people from different places and cultures, and her friend, Swish, a basketball fanatic who is a little bit shy, but always loves trying other sports and activities, are on an adventure in sunny Costa Rica. When they arrive, the duo is met by Sammy the Surfer who takes them through the lush jungle to a beach-side town where he’ll teach them how to surf. Divot & Swish are nervous about surfing and afraid of what could happen if they fall off their surfboard. They follow Sammy’s lead, learning how to stand, balance and paddle. Still unsure of surfing, Divot & Swish watch Sammy take on the waves before trying it themselves. Gathering all the strength and courage they have, Divot & Swish paddle out to catch the next big wave. They make it up on their boards and ride towards the shore. Swish gives it his best but falls into the water. He surfaces just in time to see Divot make it to shore. Sammy greets them both with a smile and big high fives, congratulating them on having the courage to conquer their fear.
Adventures with Divot & Swish in Costa Rica: The Superpower of Courage is a beautifully illustrated children's book. Its upbeat tone carries the reader from one page to the next, just like the waves in the ocean. The two main characters are so unique. I've never seen any characters like them. Their illustrations match their personalities, showing children the multiple layers a person (or a character) can have. Divot is more outgoing while Swish is just a little bit more timid. Their personalities affect how they tackle the obstacles and fears they encounter. Together, however, they support each other on new adventures like learning how to surf.
The story shows some realistic moments of anxious anticipation for both Divot and Swish. I appreciate how vulnerable the characters are in their apprehension of learning how to surf, especially with a scene about a sleepless night of anticipation. It helps that an expert is there to help them, but their fears are still valid and real. Sammy the Surfer makes sure to tell them this while helping them become more confident and comfortable. This book is a good lesson on how to take little steps to conquering a fear or learning how to work with your anxiety.
This book would be good for children who are nervous about a new activity or are feeling anxious about something unknown and new in their lives. The rhyming makes the story light while also sharing some real emotions they will encounter in life. It is a great conversation starter for parents or teachers to use with younger children.
