A Prophecy of Wings Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

A betrayal, a prophecy, a kingdom in the balance. Sixteen years ago the evil Dahlia overthrew the kingdom of Roshall Grove, the heart of the Fairy World. A prophecy foreseen by Edwina, a powerful enchantress, remains the only hope to topple her iron-fisted rule. Now, Lina, a simple peasant girl, learns her future is linked to this prophecy. Edwina brings Lina to the Fairy World to fulfill her destiny—conquering Queen Dahlia. Separated from the enchantress by agents of the dark queen, Lina begins a perilous journey to join the Resistors, who await her return to mount their attack. Thrust into this strange world, Lina must navigate relations with a host of different fairies and animals, never knowing who seeks to help or to thwart her. Finally reunited with the Resistors, Lina must find the strength to lead her people and fulfill the prophecy. Meanwhile, Dahlia prepares for the battle, which will ultimately decide the survival of her reign, while reflecting on the path that brought her and her foe to this moment of reckoning. A fairy tale with an ending twist, A Prophecy of WIngs is loosely based on Thumbelina by Hans Christian Andersen and examines the ideas of predestined fates and the subsequent, sometimes unforeseen, consequences.

Review

"Jane McGarry's A Prophecy of Wings faithfully and creatively retells the fairy tale of Thumbelina. I enjoyed connecting the original tale to the retelling as well as marveling at how effortlessly Jane McGarry weaves her own story in between. " ~ JC Minnaar for Readers' Favorite

Enjoyable Fairytale Retelling

Enjoyable Fairytale Retelling
Thank you to the author for sending me a signed copy of this book! It was a cute retelling of Thumbelina. I had a hard time connecting with the protagonist in the first half of the story, but I was instantly intrigued by the evil queen's backstory. The story really picked up in the second half, and there was interesting twist at the end. Overall an enjoyable read!

What a wonderful retelling of the Thumbelina story. From the very beginning, the world that the author builds is enchanting and full. It gripped my imagination and blew me away. I’m also impressed with the words the author chooses. With a young adult target audience, she doesn’t hold back her vocabulary and “dumb it down” as many YA novels tend to do. With a strong female lead, the story takes us through many turns before we reach the conclusion. Definitely a beautiful and fun read.

I do think that there were so many great components to this book. I love fairy tale retellings and felt like the Thumbelina tale was strongly represented. The world building done by the author was immaculate and detailed and the main reason that I enjoyed the story to the extent that I did. I also was surprised (in a good way) by the unexpected twists at the end regarding Dahlia and Lina. There was minimal battle gore and not much in the ways of romance, but what did occur is what I would expect of a YA or middle grade fantasy novel. My main issue was the character development. Characters felt bland to me, and I wish that more had been done to differentiate between them. Lina especially felt as though she didn't have much substance.

I lived the book. It ended great

Upon the death of her adoptive parents, Lina learns that she is a fairy princess from another world. There was a prophecy foretold about the evil Dahlia taking over the throne of the kingdom of Roshall Grove, the heart of the Fairy World. Lina must go to this Fairy World and stop the evil queen and save the Fairy World.

Upon her arrival in Fairy World Lina is separated from her guide a witch fairy, Winnie who has been looking out for Lina her whole life. Lina now finds herself all alone in a world that she has never been to before, a world that she knows nothing about. She knows her task is to find the evil queen but in what direction she needs to go she has no clue and not knowing anyone in this world she doesn’t know who to turn to or who she can trust.

But she does luck out I guess you could say as she does meet some nice people on her journey that are willing to help her out and guide her to the evil queen. But there are some who are looking for Lina that want to do her harm and stop her from completing her task.

I so enjoyed reading A Prophecy of Wings as it reminded me so much of Thumbelina the little fairy. I could just see this little fairy, Lina flying around trying to find her way. I saw her in a pink little fairy dress, so dainty with a little wand in her hand you know like the Disney fairy princess. I could just imagine how she would sound with a soft-spoken voice. I thought of Alice in Wonderland as she was making her way through the forest. I pictured it as a fairy in Wonderland walking or more like skipping through the forest.

A Prophecy of Wings is a cute little story that I would recommend for teens and young adults, well, you know I think any age group would love this little gem, a fairy tale retelling of Thumbelina. Pick up your copy today!

An engaging fairy tale following Lina who is thrust into the Fairy World to fulfill her destiny. A wonderful retelling of the Thumbelina story. The story itself is easy to get into right away, and it holds your attention, keeping you flipping those pages, eager to see if Lina will be able to fulfill her destiny and ace off against her evil aunt, Queen Dahlia.
The story starts off with a birth and a death. These two intertwined events set off the rest of the story. Lina, a seemingly normal peasant girl, discovers she's actually a fairy, and the old witch woman she's been visiting is actually the enchantress who whisked her away from the fairy world sixteen years ago. A prophecy foretells of Lina returning to this world she doesn't know and leading her people against Queen Dahlia.

This book was incredible!! I was hooked from the very beginning just from even the prologue! This book was right up my alley with the fairy world and all the different magical fantasy elements it incorporated. I really felt like the inspiration did come from Barbie Fairytopia and Thumbelina so it brought me right back to my childhood. I will definitely be reading this book again!!
