Empathy written by Manuela Ocampo (Magu) is a delightful book that is meant to help children identify and develop the emotion of empathy. If you are looking for a book with this theme for your young reader, then this book is for you.
Maddie is excited to teach you what she has learnt in school. She has learned what it feels like to be in someone else's shoes. Instead of walking in their shoes, proverbially, she invites us to imagine what it feels like wearing them and there are many different kinds of shoes. Then you are called to act by simply encouraging children to ask, "Can I help you?"
While some people may find strange the concept of teaching empathy, it is my understanding that some children do not naturally experience empathy, and if left unchecked, they will not develop this emotion because of emotional or mental disability. Thus, they must be taught the process. As such, there is place for this book and value therein.
The pictures in this book are adorable. They are bright and beautiful. The color scheme will draw children to the pages too. I also found the use of narratives to be a great method to teach empathy. Very well-done!
The best part of this book is the part that, I think, is intended for parents, who will be reading alongside their children.
In sum, I would encourage anyone who is interested in teaching children about empathy to get this book at their local bookstore or online.
